The fact that the commissioned composers are none other than Michael Pisaro and Magnus Granberg speaks volumes about the high esteem in which IMO is held… This album is not Marcus Granberg's first outing on Insub; his impressive 2017 album Nattens Skogar (Version For Four Players), in the company of Cyril Bondi, d'incise and the Swedish violinist Anna Lindal, had that distinction and forged links which led to this IMO album.

The fifth CD in the Canadian Composers Series is also the debut appearance on Another Timbre by the Jack Quartet. It features chamber music for strings by the Berlin-based composer Marc Sabat, whose compositions explore the world of Just Intonation. But, as Nick Storring argues in the booklet accompanying the Canadian Composers Series of CDs, “to fixate upon this aspect of his music conceals at least half of what makes it so beguiling and beautiful. From an aural perspective, what is most salient about his work is not the system itself but his fluency within it. Part of this is attributable to his deep insight and compassion surrounding performance.

The title of Another Timbre’s latest series of releases, “Violin +1”, would seem to imply that the violin is the star, and the ‘+1’ just an accompaniment. However, the label’s recording of composer Linda Catlin Smith’s “Dirt Road” is very much an equal partnership between violinist Mira Benjamin and percussionist Simon Limbrick, if anything slightly skewed towards the percussion. Unfolding over fifteen movements, the order of which is intended to be flexible, the piece drifts and meanders through a wild and intensely-evoked world of forest, weather, and silence.

Toronto-based composer Linda Catlin Smith has been well represented in Another Timbre’s ten-volume release of contemporary Canadian composers, including the eight varied pieces of The Wanderer and the two-CD set, The Drifter. Here she shares a disc with that work of concentration-camp genius, Messiaen’s, Quatuor pour la fin du temps. They’re performed by the English ensemble Apartment House, and share the instrumentation of violin, cello, clarinet and piano.

Four beautiful chamber works, three performed by Apartment House, one by an ensemble from the Janacek School of Music in the Czech Republic. The title track, Hlaholika, was commissioned by Another Timbre as one of the label's 'quarantine commissions' during Covid lockdown in 2020.

This was Matt Bianco's first album after splitting from Warner Brothers. Eager to take on the world without the constraints of a marketing department, Mark Fisher and Mark Reilly recorded this in the Fishbowl, Fisher's own studio on the outskirts of London. This record saw a new group of session musicians participating in the production, although Robin Jones was still around to record percussive layers that support the songs rhythm structure. Ronnie Ross had died, so the brass section had to be reorganised as well, giving the record a different timbre. To be sold, the record needed distributors, which were found for Germany, France, Spain, Latin America and Asia, but only JVC-Victor in Japan really made some headway in promoting them to the local audience, and the album went Gold there. Due to lack of airplay it failed to have any major impact in the rest of the world. This was not due to particularly bad material, as songs like "You and I" and "Head over Heels" are some of the best Fisher wrote. Nevertheless, the lack of backing of a major label was certainly showing.

10 years have gone by since O3 debut album "… de las piedras" was released on the english label Another Timbre. Since then the trio have been working sporadically in Europe and also collaborating with artist like Merce Cunningham Dance Ensemble, Miguel Angel Tolosa, Kim Myhr, Jane Rigler and Jim Denley. The last three years O3 has been involved with the Norwegian contemporary circus ensemble Stella Polaris, making music for three different performances.
