Il pomo d’oro and Francesco Corti present Handel’s Apollo e Dafne and Armida abbandonata, together with two outstanding vocalists: soprano Kathryn Lewek (Armida & Dafne) and baritone John Chest (Apollo). Handel composed these two cantatas shortly after his Italian sojourn (1706-1709), and they demonstrate his acquaintance with and aptitude for Italian operatic music. Compared to opera, supporting roles are left out of these relatively compact cantatas, increasing the focus on the main characters, and heightening the expressive depth of their music. Il pomo d’oro performs these pieces with historically-informed ears, lively and colourful. The cantatas alternate with several delightful orchestral pieces by Handel, including several movements from his Almira Suite.

"A whole disc of new music, plus Eno’s seminal original album re-mastered. To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 spaceflight and moon landing in July 1969, comes this extended edition of Brian Eno, Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois’s seminal ‘Apollo’ album. Originally scored to accompany director Al Reinert’s landmark feature-length documentary ‘For All Mankind’, the original ‘Apollo’ album has been remastered by Abbey Road’s Miles Showell. It also comes with 11 new instrumental compositions which reimagine the soundtrack to the film, marking the first time the three musicians have collaborated since the original sessions in 1983. ‘Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks – Extended Version’ is presented here as a 2CD set."

This is the second release on ONYX from the amazing Moscow Soloists and their charismatic director, the great Yuri Bashmet. Their first ONYX release was of Chamber Symphonies by Shostakovich, Sviridov and Vainberg (ONYX4007) which gained excellent reviews, including a Grammy 2007 nomination. This disc combines two great Stravinsky works for strings: the marvellous neo-classical ballet Apollon musagète (in the revised 1947 version entitled simply Apollo) and the post-war Concerto in D for strings, with a genuine novelty: in 1962 Rudolf Barshai arranged for his own Moscow Chamber Orchestra 15 of the 20 Visions fugitives that Prokofiev wrote for solo piano between 1915-17. Now Roman Balashov, manager and violist in the Moscow Soloists has completed the set for this world première recording. These are exciting miniatures which truly benefit from the added colours a string orchestra can bring.

An astonishing record of James and the Flames tearing the roof off the sucker at the mecca of R&B theatres, New York's Apollo. When King Records owner Syd Nathan refused to fund the recording, thinking it commercial folly, Brown single-mindedly proceeded anyway, paying for it out of his own pocket. He had been out on the road night after night for a while, and he knew that the magic that was part and parcel of a James Brown show was something no record had ever caught. Hit follows hit without a pause – "I'll Go Crazy," "Try Me," "Think," "Please Please Please," "I Don't Mind," "Night Train," and more. The affirmative screams and cries of the audience are something you've never experienced unless you've seen the Brown Revue in a Black theater. If you have, I need not say more; if you haven't, suffice to say that this should be one of the very first records you ever own.

Apollo: Missions to the Moon is a documentary film directed by Tom Jennings (Diana: In Her Own Words) for National Geographic. The documentary covers the Apollo Space Program with raw media, eschewing narration for footage and audio of the program. This includes samples of never-before-audio pulled from over 800 hours of recordings and Apollo black box recordings, turning the documentary into an Apollo-era time machine. The score to Apollo: Missions to the Moon was composed by James Everingham and produced by Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Inception) and Russell Emanuel. The soundtrack blends cosmic pieces with electronically manipulated sounds of 1960s space exploration, including the Apollo and Russian Sputnik programs. The end result is a fascinating, endlessly listenable work that stands tall on its own.

Songs are a bit shorter than on 1st press, they fade off quicker. Volume is a bit lower and bass are a bit louder. This repress sounds very nice.
