Un voyage aérien de deux mille cinq cents kilomètres sur la côte atlantique des États-Unis. Le voyage commence en Floride : avec son climat tropical et son ambiance décontractée, l’American way of life prend des airs de vacances…

Première saga nordique, la série en 15 épisodes « Voyages en pays nordiques » suit 90 Scandinaves qui mènent une vie hors du commun. Les paysages grandioses ont été filmés d’hélicoptère en Cinéflex, un système hypersophistiqué qui permet des zooms d’une qualité époustouflante. Le résultat crève les yeux.

La menace qui pesait sur le monde durant la guerre froide s'est matérialisée par deux essais nucléaires : celui des Américains dans l'atoll de Bikini et, plus terrifiant encore, celui des Soviétiques au-dessus de l'archipel de Nouvelle-Zemble. Le 1er mars 1954, les États-Unis lancent l'opération "Castle Bravo" qui consiste à faire exploser dans l'atmosphère la première bombe à hydrogène au-dessus d'un archipel du sud du Pacifique. Sa puissance équivaut à 5 mégatonnes (millions de tonnes de TNT), celle d'Hiroshima ne représentant "que" 12 000 tonnes. Mais au moment de l'explosion, l'équipe de chercheurs qui a conçu la bombe réalise que celle-ci a dépassé leurs calculs : ce sont 15 mégatonnes qui ont en fait éclaté. Résultat : trois îles coralliennes rayées de la carte. Leurs cendres s'éparpillent dans le ciel à 30 kilomètres, avant de retomber sur 11 000 km² et de contaminer les populations des atolls voisins…

It was with the repertoire of French masters that the German pianist Walter Gieseking became most famous. The impressionistic piano writing of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel required the most sensitive touch and attention to color and nuance, and Gieseking's finger acuity, imaginative pedaling, and above all, preternaturally alert ear made him an ideal interpreter of this music. Nevertheless, his own repertoire ranged widely across eras and national boundaries. Largely self-taught as a pianist, Gieseking was born in Lyon, France, on November 5, 1895; with his family (his father was a distinguished doctor and entomologist), he traveled in France and Italy until he enrolled at the Hannover Conservatory, where he came under the tutelage of Karl Leimer, making his debut in 1915. Gieseking was drafted into the German army a year after his first public performance but escaped combat by performing in his regimental band.
