Laboratory Astrophysics and Space Research by P. Ehrenfreund, C. Krafft, H. Kochan, V. Pirronello
English | PDF | 1999 | 685 Pages | ISBN : 0792353382 | 68.9 MB

The book presents the most recent developments of laboratory studies in astrophysics and space research. The individual chapters review laboratory investigations under simulated space conditions, studies for the design of successful space experiments or for supporting the interpretation of astronomical and space mission recorded data. Related theoretical models, numerical simulations and in situ observations demonstrate the necessity of experimental work on the Earth's surface. The expertise of the contributing scientists covers a broad spectrum and is included in general overviews from fundamental science to recent space technology.

Astrophysics of the Diffuse Universe by Michael A. Dopita , Ralph S. Sutherland
English | PDF | 2003 | 445 Pages | ISBN : 3540433627 | 44 MB

Our purpose in writing this book is to show how physics has been applied to developing our current understanding of the phase structure, physical condi tions, chemical makeup and, evolution of the (thermal) interstellar medium. We hope it provides an up-to-date overview which postgraduates, advanced undergraduates, and professionals in astrophysics can use as a "reference of first resort" before going on to read the more specialist monographs or research literature.

Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology: A Primer by Peter Hoyng
English | PDF | 2006 | 295 Pages | ISBN : 1402045212 | 6.7 MB

Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology offers a succinct and self-contained treatment of general relativity and its application to compact objects, gravitational waves and cosmology. The required mathematical concepts are introduced informally, following geometrical intuition as much as possible. The approach is theoretical, but there is ample discussion of observational aspects and of instrumental issues where appropriate.

Gravitation in Astrophysics: Cargèse 1986 by B. Carter, J. B. Hartle

With the discovery of pulsars, quasars, and galactic X-ray sources in the late 60's and early 70's, and the coincident expansion in the search for gravitational waves, rela tivistic gravity assumed an important place in the astrophysics of localized objects. Only by pushing Einstein's solar-system-tested general theory of relativity to the study of the extremes of gravitational collapse and its outcomes did it seem that one could explain these frontier astronomical phenomena. This conclusion continues to be true today. Relativistic gravity had always played the central role in cosmology. The discov ery of the cosmic background radiation in 1965, the increasing understanding of matter physics at high energies in the decades following, and the growing wealth of observations on the large scale structure meant that it was possible to make increasingly detailed mod els of the universe, both today and far in the past. This development, not accidentally, was contemporary to that for localized objects described above.
