Yes' second (and least successful) album was a transitional effort; the group trying for a more produced and sophisticated sound through the use of an orchestra. Even so, the results weren't conventional, because the group didn't tone down or turn down its sound. Much of Time and a Word relies on bold, highly animated performances by Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, and Tony Kaye. Additionally, by this time the group was developing a much tauter ensemble than was evident on their first LP, so there's no lack of visceral excitement. "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed" was a bold opening, a highly amplified, frenzied adaptation of the Richie Havens song, melded with Jerome Moross' title music from the movie The Big Country…

Who'd have thought it? Magnification is the strongest, freshest set of new Yes material in a long time. Having thoroughly exhausted the world's supply of classically inclined rock keyboard players, the four remaining members of Yes have dispensed with that perennially bothersome ivory-tickling slot altogether. And so Messrs Jon Anderson, Alan White, Chris Squire, and Steve Howe have enlisted the temporary services of soundtrack composer Larry Groupe, whose cinematic orchestrations lend a thoroughly modern aura to the band's sonic palette…

It is unusual when two iconic musical influences have a deep-rooted history. Bob Dylan revolutionized the folk industry in the early sixties. Around the same time, a group consisting of four Canadians and one U.S. Southerner were cutting their rock and roll teeth as the back-up band to Ronnie Hawkins. An epiphany for rock and roll occurred at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Dylan went electric and outraged the folk community. A subsequent tour supported by The Hawks (later renamed The Band) became a watershed moment for modern music.

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

Living in The Age of The Reissue offers a variety of benefits for the musically-minded person. Now, you can get to know Carl Perkins in the same way that the public at large knew Elvis Presley back in the day. The constraints of what is popular now no longer dictate the kinds of music we are familiar with, in spite of sales figures, the proliferation of music videos (distributed through whatever means is popular at the time), or even their inclusion in TV and film. The Age of The Reissue liberates us from the stale conformity of Top 40, and allows our musical dollars the chance to flow in obscure, seldom traveled paths, and in many cases, offer us a chance to excavate the past in a way that was never previously thought possible.

The recent turn to anti-immigrant sentiments and policies is a troubling development in the history of our great nation. Almost every week in 2018 brings news of family separations at the US-Mexico border, the plight of undocumented young Americans known as “Dreamers,” or the tweetstorm demonization of those who aren’t from our country.
But, then again, America has a checkered history when it comes to foreigners. From the anti-immigrant laws of the 1880s, which disallowed Chinese workers, to those of the 1930s that resulted in the deportation of thousands of Mexicans, several US policies have shunned foreigners. What makes these measures so disturbing is that America is composed mostly of immigrants and their descendants, as well as those whose ancestors were African slaves. Every generation faces the anti-immigrant scourge, so America is always in need for those to speak up and out on behalf of others.

New Orleans is one of the world’s great cultural crossroads, and the city where jazz was born. Putumayo has released three great albums to capture the essence of New Orleans' music: "New Orleans" and "Kermit Ruffins" in 2005 and "New Orleans Brass" in 2007. Albums that you will want to hear again and again. Great names like Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima and Dr. John, the famous young vocalist and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins and many uplifting brass bands offer a musical experience of rare beauty. Enjoy really great music from Putumayo.
