In between projects and musical collaborations in Europe and Africa, Brussels saxophonist Toine Thys recorded his third album as a trio, ‘The Optimist’, in New York with some major names from Jazz and African music. Desertions, snowstorms, cancelled flights, fires and calendar issues; everything seemed to go against the creation of this new album. With unbeatable energy and optimism in the face of all the trials, Toine Thys finally managed to bring these magnificent musicians together in a New York studio to record this album.

Saxophonist Margitza - who appeared in one or two of Miles Davis's late-80s fusion bands - is in London next Monday and Tuesday with a very different project to this - playing small-group contemporary jazz with the Moutin Brothers quartet. Bohemia is an altogether bigger and bolder operation, highlighting the Coltrane-influenced Margitza's interest in extended composition and adding a thick-textured, fusion-friendly soup of basses, keys, bouzoukis, voices, strings and Ennio Morricone-like whistling to some agile soprano and tenor sax lines.

Gabi Hartmann is the atypical universe of an artist who blurs the styles between pop, folk, jazz, soul and world. She sings what inspires her in several languages, escaping the categories.

Pop/rock hits performed in jazz interpretation by famous and not so famous artists. Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Anka puts his stamp on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Norah Jones & The Charles Hunter Quartet put a jazz template on "More Than This", etc.
