Cellist Yegor Dyachkov and pianist Jean Saulnier present Beethoven’s complete Sonatas and Variations for Cello and Piano in digital and physical formats. Comprising works from the composer’s Op. 5, Op. 17, Op. 66, and Op. 102, the complete sonatas will be released as a three-CD box set on October 28, 2022. Spanning the composer’s three creative periods, Beethoven’s sonatas for cello and piano constitute a unique group within his oeuvre. “Recording the complete sonatas marks a milestone in an artistic career,” says cellist Yegor Dyachkov. “Most artists undertake such a project only once, and only after having spent a long time in the company of these works, so that the various possible interpretive paths reach a kind of equilibrium.”

This album contains 57 tracks/3 hours and 13 minutes of masterpieces by Georges Cziffra. Brahms: Hungarian Dances (arranged by Cziffra), Schumann: Carnival, Toccata, Symphonic Etudes, Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathetique", No. 21 "Waldstein", No. 23 "Appassionata", and more. Recorded 1956-1983.

There's a tendency on the part of some performers to play Beethoven's First and Second Piano Concertos as if they were really by Mozart–all elegance, poise, and refinement. Happily, Boris Berezovsky finds the Beethovenian fire burning beneath the Mozartian surface. Right from his vibrant entrance in Concerto No. 1, Berezovsky plays with fierce energy (despite his generally light touch) and a clearly discernible enjoyment. This is matched Thomas Dausgaard's equally electric reading of the orchestral part, which in many ways reminds me of the classic Szell/Fleisher recording. Of course the small-scale sound of the 38-member Swedish Chamber Orchestra cannot possibly equal the full sonority of the Cleveland Orchestra in its heyday, but it's remarkable how Szell's clear textures and crisp articulation match Dausgaard's, who, by the way, is using the new Barenreiter editions. Berezovsky seems to be of like mind with Fleisher, at least terms of his singing tone and mercurial style.

The Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, by Ludwig van Beethoven is a piano trio completed in 1811. It is commonly referred to as the Archduke Trio, because it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, the youngest of twelve children of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and a patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven. Beethoven dedicated about a dozen compositions to him.
