Probably the most influential pianist in jazz, Bill Evans has left his mark on the likes of Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau. The pianist on Miles Davis’ quintessential 1959 album "Kind of Blue" and a key figure in the development of jazz piano, Bill Evans was a pioneer in multi-track jazz recording, a key player in the rise of modal jazz, and a multiple Grammy Award winner. Covering the later part of his life, from the Warner Bros and Elektra studio and live recordings, here are five gems in one pack.

I have already reviewed several albums by Harry Edison, so perhaps there is not much more to say. I've pointed out his liking for certain clich‚s which recur frequently in his solos. These include the repetition of pairs of notes, downward glissandi, and a long-held note which eventually rises then falls. These phrases are well in evidence on this double CD consisting of three original LPs plus seven tracks from the album Sweets. Despite the clich‚s, Harry Edison can charm the birds out of the trees with his unique style, possibly perfected during his long years with the Count Basie Orchestra. His methods are relaxed and seldom assertive. He has a gorgeous tone which is subdued when he adds a mute to the trumpet and he always swings easily, knowing that swing is achieved by the subtle use of syncopation and leaving spaces in the music.

The two LP editions recorded at this Paris concert were the last examples of Bill Evans' playing to be released at the time. With bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe La Barbera, Evans had one of the strongest trios of his career, as can be heard on such pieces as Edition One's "My Romance," "I Loves You, Porgy," and "Beautiful Love." The close communication between the players is reminiscent of Evans' 1961 unit with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian.

The legendary Four Brothers reed section of Woody Herman's famous "Second Herd" big band of 1947, (Herbie Steward, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz and Serge Chaloff) is reimagined and reinvigorated by jazz icons Harry Allen, Eric Alexander, Grant Stewart and Gary Smulyan on the exciting, swinging and audacious recording of The Candy Men by Harry Allen's All Star New York Saxophone Band. Offering a sensational set of twelve bop-infused tunes containing some hard-driving, mid-tempo swing pieces to breathy and bossa-styled ballads, one sampling of this disc is just not enough. The material and the musicianship is so outstanding, that the late, great bandleader Woody Herman himself, would be proud of the way this group of jazz icons, has so elegantly represented the original Brothers section.

Born William John Evans on 16 August 1929, Bill Evans is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time and is considered by some to have been the most influential post-World War II jazz keyboardist. Evans' use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today. Unlike many other jazz musicians of his time, Evans never embraced new movements like jazz fusion or free jazz. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Evans was classically trained and studied at Southeastern Louisiana University. In 1955 he moved to New York, where he worked with bandleader and theorist George Russell. In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis' sextet, where he was to have a profound influence. In 1959, the band, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time. In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, a group now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio.
