History, it is said, is written by the victors. With jazz history, the story is too often written by New Yorkers, or at least those east of the Mississippi. Listeners with inquisitive minds are required to dig deeper, into record bins and into interviews with musicians to learn about players that did not make New York their home.

When I saw that two of my favorite authors had teamed up on a post-apocalyptic book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. It is completely different from anything I have read by either of them before. The story takes place about 300 years after the human race has been nearly wiped out. It tells the story of a group of people, descendants of original survivors, who struggle to exist in a small community surrounded by high walls.
