MFSL Aluminium

By 1983 MoFi had grown into a company with over 25 employees and grossing over $8 million annually. Then they nearly lost it all. The new darling on the scene was the compact disc. Because MoFi had been putting something on the order of 20% of their earnings back into research, they were prepared for the next wave. In the mid ‘80s, they launched their assault on the CD market with their half-speed
wares.

Their first efforts were released on aluminum discs, very much like all other discs at the time. And, in fact, some of these have become quite rare. Recently copies of them regularily go for >$75 on e-Bay. Partly, in an effort to justify the higher price they needed to charge, MoFi began to release their works on gold-plated compact discs called UltraDiscs. Although gold in and of itself isn’t significantly better than aluminum for the reproduction of ones and zeros, it oxidizes roughly ten times more slowly than aluminum. It is also supposed to coat more evenly than aluminum. This last attribute is said to cut down on the pin-holing so common to aluminum CDs, which allows for less error-correction during playback. This means more of the actual recording and less processor interpolation gets to your ears. So there was some inherent advantage to the gold treatment.

This aptly named disc showcases James Booker's piano playing; his stretches and runs are breathtaking in their fluidity. This disc (along with its Rounder partner, Resurrection of the Bayou Maharajah) was culled from some 60 or so hours of tapes that John Parsons recorded at the Maple Leaf Bar from 1977 to 1982. The main difference in the music on the two discs is that this one is purely instrumental.

Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison continued their homage to the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little duo with a second set of performances recorded at Sweet Basil. They featured "Fire Waltz" and "Bee Vamp," two more tunes the duo immortalized during their Five Spot performances. Their versions are well-intentioned, frequently exciting, and superbly played. But they are not transcendent for the simple reason that Harrison lacks Dolphy's fluency on either alto sax or bass clarinet, and Blanchard does not possess Little's command of the upper register or his embouchure. That is not a knock; they certainly clicked with the rhythm section of pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Ed Blackwell, who did play on the originals. Both of these volumes are highly recommended, but if you have not heard the originals, do whatever it takes to get them.

To clear up a couple possible points of confusion about this 2010 release: although it came out on the British Ace label, it's actually a compilation of material that came out on the American Ace label between the mid-'50s and mid-'60s (with the exception of a couple cuts that didn't appear until the early '70s). Also, it's not identical to the 12-track LP titled The Ace Story, Vol. 2 that came out in the '70s. This edition adds 12 bonus tracks, making it a more comprehensive sampler of the label's rock and R&B.

Growing up, my dad would spin Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel albums on car rides and pre-Internet quiet time at home, and that’s where the foundation of my music experience began. Now, as many of my peers start popping out their own offspring, I’ve started to wonder what tunes Millennial parents are going to play for their kids. Thankfully, Starbucks has provided the answer with their new compilation CD, Music for Little Hipsters. No, seriously.

This is the second of three sets that document the Eric Dolphy/Booker Little quintet's playing at the Five Spot (the third volume is titled Memorial Album). It features a group made up of pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Ed Blackwell really stretching out during long versions of Little's "Aggression" and the standard "Like Someone in Love."

Masterworks-The Quest, Cookbook-mixed with above average material, IMO-The Book Cooks, That's It, Up and Down, Jazz In the Garden At The Museum of Modern Art. Booker Ervin had a distinguished career as both leader and sideman. While I wouldn't label him a "giant of jazz" Booker repays careful listening-his artistry is consistently inventive, his voice distinct from the anonymous mainstream. Whether he's playing originals or interpreting standards like "Autumn Leaves" or "Poiniciana", Booker Ervin is sure to impress the discerning listener with his flair for the dramatic, coupled with his lyricism and sense of irony. While I wouldn't rate this an essential buy, this collection represents a worthy addition to any jazz lover's library. The sound quality is adequate, if a bit dated by its era of origin (early stereo). The price makes "6 Classic Albums" a true bargain. ~ review by Jeffrey Tedford

To celebrate his 70th birthday, (March 15th) Charles Lloyd presents his first live quartet album; a really exciting set of music recorded in Basel in 2007 featuring a revamped Quartet now with young stars Jason Moran on piano and Reuben Rogers on bass both making ECM debuts here. The latest offering is blisteringly up-tempo and sensually ballad-oriented and include also a beautiful cover of Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez s tune.
