Böhm was reported to have told the Wiener Philharmoniker towards the end of his life "I loved you as one can only love a woman". Listening to this boxset, capturing the Concertgebouworkest at the peak of its powers (between 1935 and June 1941), still at a commendable level (between July 1941 and 1944) before having to rebuild from the ashes of war (1945 to 1947) to finally come back to the highest level (1949-1950), the careful auditor has history in the making unfolding with its drama, its joys, but essentially its incommensurable beauty.

This second volume concludes the labels survey of its iconic series by presenting more legendary analogue albums. Including key recordings such as Beethovens Late Sonatas with Pollini, Berliozs Symphonie Fantastique with Markevitch, Brahmss Hungarian Dances with Karajan, Dvoraks New World with Fricsay, Chopin Preludes with Argerich, Respighis Fontane & Pini di Roma with Karajan, Schuberts Great C major Symphony with Furtwängler, the Schumann Piano Concerto with Richter and Dichterliebe with Wunderlich, Stravinsky with Boulez, Verdi Choruses with Abbado and many more.

Volume 2 of EMI's comprehensive Herbert von Karajan centenary edition gathers virtually all of the conductor's operatic and vocal output for the label in one place, taking up 71 CDs (Disc 72 contains complete librettos in the form of PDF files). I use the word "virtually" because the package omits four posthumously issued archival items taped live during the 1957-60 Salzburg Festivals (Beethoven's Missa solemnis, Brahms' German Requiem, Bruckner's Te Deum, and Verdi's Requiem). The opening chorus "Jauchzet Frolocket" is absolutely awesome. I have never heard any other performance that captures the brilliance and power in that chorus the way Flamig and the Kreuzchor do. Equally amazing is the way they combine precision and expressive sensitivity (may have something to do with the influence of Heinrich Schutz on the Dresden Kreuzchor). It avoids the lush excesses of many "modern" performances as well as the weak sound of some "authentic" performances. This is Bach at its best.
