Walter Trout's eponymous debut for Ruf finds the former Canned Heat and John Mayall guitarist at the top of his game, tearing through a number of original contemporary blues songs. The songwriting occasionally is a little undistinguished, but Trout sounds dynamic throughout the album, capable of fiery leads and sensitive, lyrical solos. It was made for aficionados of blues guitar, and it won't disappoint anyone looking for that kind of record.

Great one and only LP by this early 70s band from Calgary Alberta Canada. They were formed from the ashes of a 60s psych band called 'The 49th Parallel, also from Calgary. Painter's music was heavy rock, in the style of BTO or April Wine, and played just as well…

Official Release # 72. While no specific designation has been given to Joe's Corsage (2004), the liner notes indicate that this is the debut of an "exciting new series." The title is undoubtedly a clever play on Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage (1979), but the "Joe" in this case is audio archivist Joe Travers, who has been involved with the Zappa Family Trust (ZFT) since the triple-CD release Läther (1996). Granted, exceptions exist, however for the most part the earliest incarnations of the Mothers of Invention are included here with Zappa (guitar/vocals), "Baby" Ray Collins (vocals/tambourine/harmonica), Roy Estrada (bass), and Jimmy Black (drums).

Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders. –Derek Rath

The Hollywood Fats Band's self-titled (and only) LP from 1979 (on PBT International - long a collector's item) could be either lauded for being incredibly authentic or knocked for being a bit apish - were it not for the level of musicianship from Mike "Fats" Mann on guitar, Al Blake on harp, Fred Kaplan on piano, Richard Innes on drums, and Canned Heat's Larry Taylor on upright bass. Great ensemble groove, although the excitement Fats could generate live never really translated to the studio.
