The Chantilly codex is the most sumptuous of the manuscripts transmitting the fascinating polyphonic songs of the late fourteenth-century France in a style known as the “ars subtilior”, the “more subtle art.” In the songs of this period, composers exerted themselves to express ever more complex rhythms, inventing new notational symbols to express them. The expression of the musical rhythm through notation was such a hot-button issue that a number of songs in the manuscript actually take it on as a topic, becoming self-referential essays about musical composition. In addition, the composers of this music worked in the great courts of Europe, and politics and political events invariably made their way into the song repertory.
The disciples of The One That Crawls are back with a monumental concept album devoted to Teredinis, a simple leper whose calling it is to become a prophet of Centipèdes as well as an incarnation of the Plague. On De Horea Leprae, Délétère offers 65 minutes of majestic and tortuous Black Metal full of furor, despair and illumination, driven by a powerful production, memorable riffs and an otherworldly vocal performance. A new Québécois Black Metal classic.
This release presents music associated with the Renaissance master Josquin Des Prez, a composer who towers above all others in the first part of the sixteenth century. Numerous works were attributed to him that have now been proven to be by his contemporaries and successors, including the central work on this recording, Jean Richafort’s expansive and beautiful Requiem. It is performed with affecting clarity by the all-male vocal group Cinquecento, whose many previous discs of Renaissance repertoire for Hyperion have garnered the highest critical praise.

The Netherlands Radio Choir and its chief conductor Benjamin Goodson bring together choral works by Josef Rheinberger and Felix Mendelssohn, presenting some of the greatest choral compositions of the nineteenth century. This recording begins with Rheinberger’s rarely-recorded Mass in E-Flat Major and closes with the composer’s stirringly beautiful Abendlied. Four of Mendelssohn’s most expressive and original psalm settings are paired with his lesser-known Sechs Sprüche, powerful choral miniatures that reflect on key moments in the church year. These pieces are performed in a warm, intimate acoustic, allowing the words and remarkable detail in this music to be heard and relished.
