When the single middle-aged Luis travels from Barcelona to bury the remains of his mother in the vault of his family in Segovia, he is lodged by his aunt Pilar in her old house where he spent his summer of 1936. He meets his cousin Angelica, who was his first love, living on the first floor with her husband and daughter, and he recalls his childhood in times of the Spanish Civil War entwined with the present.

Al cabo de los años, Luis vuelve a Segovia trayendo desde Barcelona los restos de su madre para inhumarlos en el panteón familiar. Allí pasaba los veranos, en casa de su tía Pilar y la prima Angélica. La guerra civil retuvo a Luis en Segovia, lejos de sus padres y la convivencia con Angélica despertó sus primeros sentimientos amorosos. El hombre evoca aquellos días y vuelve a su infancia con una prima Angélica casada y madre de una hija.

Writer and director Carlos Saura here dramatizes the downward slide of four young people who started out with many strikes against them. Their maladjustment to poverty and the broken homes of their childhood results in stealing and serious crime as a way of life. As their dangerous exploits unfold, one of the young men falls in love with the lone female of the four. They take this as it is, without their romance having any effect on their lifestyle. Eventually, all four hit a bad scene when a robbery goes wrong…Saura may be making a broader commentary on the ills of Spanish society here, especially since his earlier films had significant symbolic overtones. This drama won the Golden Bear award as "Best Movie" in the 1981 Berlin Film Festival.

Y a partir de entonces la trágica relación amorosa que surge entre los dos se asemejará a la descrita por la novela de Prosper Merimée en que se basa la ópera.

The entire subplot takes place in rehearsals, and includes a delightful scene of the entire troop spontaneously bursting into a parody of the campy March of the Toreadors. Saura adds scenes that depict the fantasies of the characters, which is an element that the director uses in many of his films…
