David Jon Gilmour (Cambridge, March 6, 1946 -) is the singer, guitarist and main songwriter of the British band Pink Floyd. As a recording manager, he has worked with many artists throughout his life and has a successful solo career behind him after the breakup of Pink Floyd. He donated to many charities and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2003. In 2008, he received the Q Awards "Outstanding Contributor", which he dedicated to the late Richard Wright. In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Gilmour 14th on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

The ambitious Swiss electronic duo Yello comprised vocalist/conceptualist Dieter Meier – a millionaire industrialist, professional gambler, and member of Switzerland's national golf team – and composer/arranger Boris Blank. The Cars were one of the most successful American New Wave bands to emerge in the late 1970s, and in the ensuing decade the band racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles. In April 2018, the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and reunited once more to perform at the induction ceremony.

During many collaborations in the past with top-notch session musicians, working in many musical styles, the seasoned singer/guitarist gathered lots of experience and made use of the most up to date recording techniques, but in the end it seemed more inspiring to enter the studio with his own touring band. That's what is clearly audible on "Handmade": the songs were not so much “produced” in the narrow sense of the term but were recorded in an almost live environment in the way records used to be made.
