Released by Columbia Records in 1975, the 9th Chicago album debuted as the band's first ever greatest hits collection. It had trumendous success and would be their only album to showcase the band members on the cover. The legendary John Berg, who oversaw a great many album designs during his time as Art Director, drew the inital sketch of (what he considers the first of its kind) the Chicago band logo. Taking a look into Berg's design practice as it is modeled through his work with Chicago reflects a great deal of what '70s graphic design is all about.

Chicago continued to dominate music with their 1982 Warner Bros. debut. "Chicago 16" marked the rebirth of an American band. Produced by David Foster, the album climbed to #9 on the Billboard 200 and introduced the smash Top Ten power ballad “Hard To Say I’m Sorry/Get Away”, now one of the group’s signature songs. This album also includes the gem, “Love Me Tomorrow”.

Chicago was one of the most successful bands of the rock era, racking up 21 Billboard Top Ten hits between 1970 and 1990, a period where they survived the departure of key band members while also subtly adapting to changing times. That's not an easy task for any rock band and it's especially difficult for a group like Chicago, a band that placed equal (if not greater) emphasis on horns as guitar. Picking up where Blood, Sweat & Tears left off, Chicago initially specialized in jazz-inflected prog-rock, using the sides of a vinyl record as canvasses for sprawling, adventurous rock.

Picking up where Blood, Sweat & Tears left off, Chicago initially specialized in jazz-inflected prog-rock, using the sides of a vinyl record as canvasses for sprawling, adventurous rock. Chicago quickly learned how to channel this expansive sound into concise pop songs, scoring hits in the early 1970s with such punchy tunes as "25 or 6 to 4" and "Beginnings," while also showing facility with sweeter melodies on "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Saturday in the Park." As the decade progressed, the band began to emphasize their softer side with bassist Peter Cetera singing such mellow standards as "If You Leave Me Now," "Baby, What a Big Surprise" and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."

"Chicago VI" is the 5th studio album by American rock band Chicago and was released in 1973. It is the first album to feature percussionist Laudir de Oliveira, who would become a full-fledged member of the band for Chicago VIII. Chicago VI was another commercial success, spending five weeks at #1 in the US. The band would not chart in the UK at all until 1976's Chicago X. The album was mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic. The original U.S. CD release (Columbia CK #32400) was mastered for CD by Joe Gastwirt. In 2002, Chicago VI was remastered and reissued by Rhino Records, with two bonus tracks: a Terry Kath demo called "Beyond All Our Sorrows", and a recording of Al Green's "Tired of Being Alone", taken from the 1973 TV special, Chicago in the Rockies.

Chicago guitarist Jimmy Dawkins would have preferred to leave his longtime nickname "Fast Fingers" behind. It was always something of a stylistic misnomer anyway; Dawkins' West Side-styled guitar slashed and surged, but seldom burned with incendiary speed. Dawkins' blues were generally of the brooding, introspective variety - he didn't engage in flashy pyrotechnics or outrageous showmanship.
It took a long time for Dawkins to progress from West Side fixture to nationally known recording artist. He rode a Greyhound bus out of Mississippi in 1955, dressing warmly to ward off the Windy City's infamous chill factor. Only trouble was, he arrived on a sweltering July day! Harpist Billy Boy Arnold offered the newcomer encouragement, and he eventually carved out a niche on the competitive West Side scene (his peers included Magic Sam and Luther Allison).
