Named in honor of the song by bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, acoustic funk-popsters Jump, Little Children formed at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where founding members Jay Clifford (vocals, guitar), Ward Williams (cello) and brothers Matt (harmonica, accordion, mandolin) and Evan Bivins (drums) were originally studying classical music. Influenced by a friend from Dublin, they began playing traditional Irish folk music in their spare time, increasingly drawing influence from Delta blues as well; eventually, the group quit school to focus on performing full-time, even gigging in Ireland in 1992 before returning to the U.S. and settling in Boston. There Jump, Little Children began writing and performing original material, and in the spring of 1994 they relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, adding upright bassist Jonathan Gray and building a grass-roots following through their extensive street-corner performances and club dates.

The second album by Canadian band Ocean, Give Tomorrow's Children One More Chance, was released in 1972 on the Kama Sutra label in both the U.S. and Canada . The music on the second album moved away from the gospel sound toward more of a folk pop sound. Once again the songs were the highlight of the album, written by some of the best in the business, including Robbie Robertson and Richard Manual (the Band), Cook and Greenway, Steven Stills, Carole King, and others. Despite the strong songs on the album, Ocean only managed to score a minor hit in Canada with the song "One More Chance" and was subsequently dropped by the label.

Both "groups" released their own albums and this unofficial CD put them together. "You're The Loving End" is listed as being co-written by Al Kooper while "Doin' The Banana Split" was co-written by Barry White. Only 1000 copies of this CD were made by Hollywood Library according to the back cover.

Heavy/Power Metal

In terms of sheer influence, an argument can be made that power metal wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Ronnie James Dio. During his stint with Rainbow and, to a greater extent, in his solo band, Dio set the blueprints for what would become power metal, with powerful, soaring vocals, and big, melodic riffs. Although as early as the late 70s, bands had begun to play a similar style of heavy metal (a term that didn’t even really exist at the time) to that of Rainbow, it was the mid-80s when power metal began to blossom, particularly in Europe. Bands like Accept and Helloween took sonic cues from Dio, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, and created music that was arena-ready, without giving up that heavy edge metal fans demand. Trends come and go in metal, but power metal has stayed pretty consistent, as can be heard on Black Eyed Children, the latest release from Swedish power metal outfit Astral Doors.

Paul Hillery's third compilation in this series of rare and hard to find grooves is as much a geographical journey as it is a musical one. With acts, artists and tracks linked to London, Florida, Atlanta, the Netherlands, Switzerland, California, India and Germany and more this compilation is very much proof of the global language that is music. With many of the recordings only previously existing on sold out and obscure private pressings and small runs on indie labels this collection of tracks really is a must have. Complementing the previous two albums curated by Paul Hillery we really do get to see and hear the history of studio recordings from a plethora of touring and travelling troubadours, jobbing composers and song-writers, session musicians, producers and engineers.

For this 1990 set by Phil Woods' Quintet, the altoist welcomed trombonist Hal Crook to his group, joining several longtime members: pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. Galper's melancholy ballad "Gotham Serenade" and Crook's modal blues "Ixtlan" on this CD contrast with Woods' three originals: "All Bird's Children," the upbeat "My Man Benny" (for Benny Carter) and an enthusiastic "Ole Dude." The quintet's treatments of three standards (all arranged by Crook) practically disguise the tunes, and a particular highlight is the group's version of Benny Carter's "Just a Mood," which pits Woods' clarinet with Crook's wah-wah trombone. A highly enjoyable outing.

The subtitle of this album is "New Works for Remembrance," and its four selections by British composers are united by their use of texts that deal, either explicitly or implicitly, with the personal ravages of war. They were performed by the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir at the school's annual Remembrance Day concerts. Cecilia McDowall's Ave Maris Stella would be lovely except that it is difficult to take seriously because its opening and closing sections are a brazenly transparent rip-off of Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium. Lynne Plowman's Cries Like Silence, for four soloists, choir, orchestra ………
