Inspired by 54ajax's wonderful share of Jenny Lin's Chinoisere, I decided to start a new mini-series featuring Chinese works for piano. There is a considerable body of Chinese music composed for the piano, the majority of which have been either folk song arrangements, inspired by folk music or traditional Chinese melodies or
poetic little lyric pieces with poetic titles. The current program is an outstanding overview of the history of Chinese piano music from the 1930s to the early 1980s.

Chinese vocal star Gong Linna joins New York's electric Bang on a Can All Stars in a brilliantly staged concert of new work co-composed by Lao Luo, and Bang on a Can co-artistic directors Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. Weaving together ancient Chinese storytelling and Western songwriting, Cloud River Mountain honors the “sound worlds” of both China and the West, fusing texts sung in both Mandarin and English with sophisticated chamber music, rock, folk, and jazz.

GRAMMY Award winning American Roots artists Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer join with Chinese classical hammered dulcimer player Chao Tian in this folk infused world music exploration. Chinese and American songs are accompanied on yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer), gourd banjo, five-string banjo, ukulele, guitars, dumbek, cello-banjo and mandolin.
The group’s repertoire includes traditional Chinese and Appalachian music as well as contemporary and traditional music from around the world. Unusual combinations explore new arrangements to old music, such as “Dark Eyes.” Ukulele, yangqin and guitar create a new pallet for this Russian folk song turned jazz manouche tune. Cathy and Marcy join Chao in singing a Chinese lullaby, “Nani Wan” and Chao easily adds her love of American Old-Time music to fiddle tunes and songs.

The cantata Nanjing Lament was originally composed for piano, alto and chorus when commissioned for the
sixtieth anniversary of the occupation of the city of Nanjing by the Japanese. That original version had its premiere at a Concert for Peace on December 7, 1997 at Carnegie Hall in New York. The Chinese National Symphony commissioned Jin to rewrite the cantata for full orchestra. The new version was scored for orchestra, pipa, dizi, children's chorus and regular chorus. It is this version that is presented here.
