For centuries, ancient China has fascinated the western world with its exotic music, artistic painting and writing, and harmonious gardens. The so-called Chinoiserie, a western art movement that took Chinese style as an example, was also very well received by the composers. Walter Niemann composed his impressionistic suite "Old China", Cyril Scott "Lotus Land" and Abram Chasins wrote the entertaining "Three Piano Pieces" with the effective closing piece "Rush Hour in Hong Kong".Piano pieces on Chinese folk songs or opera themes were the only way for Chinese composers to continue composing for western piano during the Cultural Revolution. This is how many works were created during this time, which still inspire us today through their artistic combination of western composition techniques with beautiful Chinese melodies with catchy tunes.

At the time Philip Bailey persuaded Phil Collins to produce his second solo album, Chinese Wall, Collins was among the hottest pop stars in the world. The advantage to that, of course, is the exposure it affords, and after the merely modest success of his debut solo album, Continuation, Bailey needed the reflected glory. On the other band, it's hard to shine yourself in such a glare, and although Bailey's name was on the gold-selling hit single "Easy Lover," a duet with Collins that helped the album take off, it's Collins' singing and drumming that one remembers. Elsewhere, tunes like "Photogenic Memory" and "Walking On The Chinese Wall" better represent Bailey's ability to handle a variety of material from ballads to techno dance tracks with his elastic falsetto. Still, Chinese Wall was a gold-selling standoff that made Bailey a solo hitmaker without really establishing him on his own.

The Finnish contemporary composer Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) fourth symphony from 1972-73 is here coupled with the composer's song cycle "Kiinalaisia lauluja" ("Chinese songs" - sung in Finnish, beautifully performed by Tiina Vahevaara) from 1997.This is contemporary music with a remarkable high musical quality and expressive impact - it is no wonder that Aho is regarded being Finland's leading composer of today. Because these two works are indeed original, deeply moving, powerful, and memorable……..

The classical works of Tan Dun typically fuse compositional elements from the East and the West, but for his soundtrack to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, musical cultures aren't so much blurred as coexistent side-by-side. While the magical martial arts film doesn't boast music as stunning as its visuals, this soundtrack is still beautiful and elegant, a perfect complement to the movie's mysticism. Just don't expect epic, John Williams-inspired bombast here. On "A Wedding Interrupted," the riveting brass and string section introduction segues into soft-hued meditations; "Night Fight" boasts spiky percussion but sounds more reminiscent of Stomp than a kung-fu scene. That said, Dun's understated score–filled with Asian instrumentation, Romantic cello solos from Yo-Yo Ma, and a token theme song with vocals by Asian pop star CoCo Lee–is still a fascinating listen. Fans of Ma and Dun shouldn't pass this up.
