On top of an old warehouse in Hamburg, the architects of Beijings Birds Nest Stadium are building a dramatic new concert hall. It’s hoped the stunning design will make Hamburg famous throughout the world. But to attract the world’s best musicians, the concert hall must sound perfect, and getting the acoustics right is notoriously difficult. To add to the pressure, the building is years behind schedule, and millions of Euros over budget.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform the 2023 New Year's Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the orchestra in the traditional feast of waltzes and polkas composed by the Strauss family and their contemporaries, culminating in the timeless By the Beautiful Blue Danube and Radetzky March.

Katie Derham introduces this year's traditional spectacular concert from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the gardens of Schonbrunn Palace. There's a distinctly French flavour to the evening with music from Bizet, Berlioz, Poulenc and Ravel, and a special appearance from the world-renowned French piano duo the Labeque sisters. The concert is conducted for the first time by Semyon Bychkov who, though Russian-born, is an honorary Frenchman on account of his being married to Marielle Labeque.

The Vienna Philharmonic’s annual Summer Night Concert takes place in the unique ambience of the Sch?nbrunn Palace Gardens in Vienna. British conductor Daniel Harding makes his Summer Night Concert debut, and the concert includes a performance by Russian-German pianist Igor Levit. Broadcasting to over 80 countries worldwide, this year’s theme is ‘Fernweh’ meaning ‘Yearning for Distant Places’ and the concert features music by Bernstein, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Elgar, Debussy and Holst.

This year's concert is led for the first time by the German conductor Christian Thielemann, guiding the Vienna Philharmonic in an array of polkas, waltzes and gallops by the Strauss family and their contemporaries.

Daniel Barenboim established the East-Western Divan Orchestra with the late Palestinian writer Edward Said in order to bring together young musicians from across the political divide in the Middle East. Their hope was that music would heal and help to bring understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and cultures.
