Cookin' was the first album to be released of the famed extended recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, wherein they taped the band's basic repertoire (and what a marvelous mixture of jazz originals and standards) in the manner of nightclub sets rather than the repetition of the usual studio takes. The album excited listeners not only with its contents but with its promise of more to come. Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Chambers and Philly Joe Jones; one of the classic groups in the history of jazz. It established a level of excellence that was to foster a long, successive line of outstanding Davis quintets and sextets through the 50s and 60s.

Veteran Canadian pianist Oliver Jones, who was finally becoming famous in the U.S. in 1987, is heard on this live set in N.Y.C. playing with bassist Dave Young and drummer Terry Clarke. Jones performs five of his diverse but consistently swinging originals, including "Snuggles" plus "If I Were a Bell" and "My Funny Valentine." An excellent example of the impressive pianist's playing talents.

The Hammond organ mastery of Jimmy Smith is arguably nowhere as profound as on 1959's Home Cookin'. Support is provided by the formidable trio of drummer Donald Bailey, guitarist Kenny Burrell, and tenor Percy France. Here they couple a few understated cool R&B classics with their own originals. The almost dirge-like cadence of "See See Rider" is given a bluesy and low-key workout, featuring tasty interaction between Smith and Burrell. The languid pace churns steadily as they trade off impressive solos with almost palpable empathy. Burrell's "Sugar Hill" swings with a refined post-bop attack…
