Following his latest release Without You in 2006, Csaba Toth Bagi has now returned to his roots and in his new album he combines traditional Macedonian, Serbian and Hungarian melodies and rhythms into a jazz structure. The album also features Hungary’s finest musicians such as bassist Laszlo Mathe, Peter Kaszas (Al Di Meola’s drummer) and saxophonist Gabor Molnar. Csaba was raised in Serbia in a family of musicians who settled in southern Hungary in 1993 during the Yugoslavian war. His father started him on the piano at the age of 6, and by age 12 he had found his voice writing and recording on the guitar.

Hungarian violinist Csaba Deseő recorded this modern jazz album, his solo debut, for German label MPS in 1975. He plays both violin and viola here, often amplified and run through effects pedals like an electric guitar. Equally talented performing classical or jazz, Deseő spent over 30 years as a member of the Budapest National Philharmonic and has played with Menuhin and Rostropovich as well as John Lewis and Jean-Luc Ponty. On this album he is accompanied by a cast of international musicians, including German keyboardist Dieter Reith who contributes several songs.

Csaba Palotai's guitar has a wild DIY feel of people who prefer setting out to arriving, who can breathe more easily in a messy cellar than in a renovated chateau. A guy whose sound has some personality, some verve, who isn't neat and tidy, waxed smooth or with a short-back-and-sides. No, Csaba Palotai's sound scratches, rubs, and grates. It's a sound that can't be domesticated: you let it kindle itself like a wood fire. Guitarists (jazz ones particularly, but not just them) often like to show that they are guitarists. Csaba Palotai tries rather to make us forget that. Plurality of sound, elegance, and modesty, this is the trinity that could define this Hungarian, now based in France for more than twenty years.

The Paris-based acoustic jazz duo consists of the Hungarian guitarist, Csaba Palotai, who has long been living and working in France, and his good British friend Steve Argüelles, a drummer and percussionist who also works as a producer and is at home in many genres. Three original compositions excepted, Csaba and Steve have fashioned the supporting pillars of their treehouse (Cabane Perchée) from the pieces of Mikrokosmos by Béla Bartók. Their transcriptions and arrangements are strongly infulenced by desert blues and the music of Moondog, immersed in soft and warm groovy tones. This is the music-making den they invite us into, replete with panorama and all mod cons, yet still with a romantic and handcrafted feel.

The album was released in 2001 as part of the Ephata series. This album blends elements of industrial, noise, and electronic music, and the title "Tortured & Formatted" suggests a theme of deconstruction and reconfiguration of sound. The music often challenges traditional forms, using harsh sounds, distortion, and unconventional techniques to create an intense listening experience. This work is likely to appeal to fans of dark, atmospheric, and experimental genres, reflecting a deep exploration of the limits of sonic expression.

It is a very difficult task to prepare for a recording that requires so much energy and attention. As this is not the usual recording with a thousand cuts and replays but follows the classical recording method (rehearsing at home, recording in the studio), it requires a very high level of preparation from the performer. Since it is a solo performance, the situation is made even more difficult by the fact that there is no other instrument to rely on, even if only for a short time.
