Which Chuck E. Weiss do we talk about here? The one who so impressed blues legends Lightnin Hopkins and Willie Dixon as a Denver teenager that they took him out in their road bands? The one who lived in LA's Tropicana Hotel in the 70s alongside Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones, ending up namechecked on the classic Waits albums Small Change and Nighthawks at the Diner, and in Rickie Lee Jones hit "Chuck E.'s in Love"? The one who has recorded with Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Roger Miller, Dr. John, Willie Dixon? Whichever Chuck E. Weiss you choose, he's a legend, and his 2014 album, Red Beans and Weiss, delivers on the big personality. Executive produced by Johnny Depp and Tom Waits, Red Beans and Weiss blends blues, barrelhouse, and bluster into a highly entertaining whole.

The title refers to an oath he swore to return to her ("I will allow nothing in Heaven or on Earth to come between us."). The story spans at least three 5-issue miniseries, the first of which appeared in 2005 and was collected as a trade paperback a year later. The second miniseries began in December of 2006 and ended in mid 2007. The trade paperback was published late in 2007. In late July 2007, Darkhorse started its . The first issue contained a short Samurai: H & E comic, which takes place between issues 2 and 3 of Volume 1. The third miniseries has yet to begin, likely to start anytime soon. One of the most transpicuous demonstrations of how an artist can successfully communicate intensity through a minimum of panels, yet maintain lavish illustrations. Stunning.

Here it is-probably the greatest swan song in the history of Chicago blues. Wolf's last studio album was every bit as uncompromising, emotional and (occasionally) funny as his first, with tunes like Coon on the Moon (which gleefully predicts black Presidents and astronauts) and Watergate Blues. A classic, with new notes and complete credits.

Take four musicians from the Caribbean, relocate them to New York and start filling their heads with the Who, Chambers Brothers, Sly and the Family Stone and Jimi Hendrix. After they become the tightest and most talked about rock band in the city, have them cut their debut album in something like three hours. This is the scenario of the Next Morning, a band of Caribbean immigrants who cut this amazing little piece of psychedelia around 1970 for Roulette's Calla subsidiary. Tunes like "Changes of the Mind," "A Jam of Love," "Life Is Love" and "Back to the Stone Age" literally drip with trippy, fuzzed over and phasey vibes. Another lost classic.

Among these are the 1964 singles "Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue)" and "I'll Be in Trouble"; and the 1965 singles "Since I Lost My Baby", and "My Baby". Seven of the album's 12 tracks had previously been released as singles and their B-sides, though "My Baby" preceded the album only by a month.
