It was recorded between 1984 and 1993 at various locations and was produced by Joe Satriani, John Cuniberti, and andy Johns. The album peaked at #95 on the U.S. Billboard 200, eventually being certified Gold by the RIAA in 1994. Analog recording, analog 30ips 1/2" mix, transferred and mastered to digital at 96/24 by John Cuniberti.

"The Extremist" is Joe Satriani's fourth studio album and was originally released on July 17, 1992. The album garnered Satriani his fourth Grammy nomination, once again for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. "The Extremist" peaked at #22 on the US Billboard 200, remaining on the chart for 28 weeks. Three singles charted on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart: "Friends" (#12); "Summer Song" (#5); and "Cryin'" (#24).

This was a different album for Satriani, he backed away from his typical blues/rock sound and decided to venture into the realm of electronic music.
