At The Golden Circle Stockholm Vol. 1 (1965). Ornette Coleman's 1965 trio with bassist David Izenzon and drummer Charles Moffett is easily the most underrated of all his bands. Coming off the light of the famed quartet in which Don Cherry, Eddie Blackwell, and Charlie Haden shone, anything might have looked a bit dimmer, it's true. But this band certainly had no apologies to make. Coleman was deep into creating a new approach to melody, since Haden and Cherry had honed his harmonic sensibilities. Izenzon proved to be the right bassist for Coleman to realize his ambitions. A stunning arco as well as pizzicato player (check his solo in "Dawn") Izenzon offered Coleman the perfect foil. No matter where Coleman's soloing moved the band, Izenzon was there at exactly the same time with an uncanny sense of counterpoint, and he often changed the harmonic mode by force…

The disco era’s most famous “family”, Sister Sledge went from promising success in Europe to phenomenal mainstream success in 1979 with the platinum-selling Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards-helmed (Chic) album WE ARE FAMILY. ‘He’s the Greatest Dancer’, ‘Lost in Music’ and ‘We Are Family’ remain classic anthems in disco’s final years before sustaining respectable hits through to the mid-80s.

New Age music's peak of popularity, chiefly among child-rearing former prog fans, coincided with the advent of corporate microcomputing in the late 1980s. Some musicians comfortable in all these realms were also fans of Mike Oldfield's late 70s and early 80s works, and one of the more accomplished such groups was Japan's Asturias. "Circle in the Forest" was their debut, a blend of often beautiful themes occasionally stunted by cold production and an apparent need to incorporate non musical programming in erstwhile musical arrangements…

Now as we enter a new year, another UK "supergroup" arrives to treat us to some fine music.
