Dependability of Engineering Systems Modeling And Evaluation

The behavior of many technical systems important in everyday life can be described using discrete states and state-changing events. Stochastic discrete-event systems (SDES) capture the randomness in choices and over time due to activity delays and the probabilities of decisions. The starting point for the evaluation of quantitative issues like performance and dependability is a formal description of the system of interest in a model.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Verification and Evaluation of Computer and Communication Systems, VECoS 2020, which was supposed to be held in Xi’an, China, in October 2020, but was held virtually instead.

The book focuses on system dependability modeling and calculation, considering the impact of s-dependency and uncertainty. The best suited approaches for practical system dependability modeling and calculation, (1) the minimal cut approach, (2) the Markov process approach, and (3) the Markov minimal cut approach as a combination of (1) and (2) are described in detail and applied to several examples.
