Jazz / Hard Bop / Post Bop / Saxophone

There are numerous recordings of Gordon's live concerts on the market, and the jazz community is the richer for it. The tenor saxophonist's mastery of technical facility, harmonic variation, his rich, warm tone, and his capacity for lyrical expression reached their fullest flower in live performance. A GORDON CANTATA, recorded in Rome in 1978, is no exception. Backed by a superb rhythm section that includes Rufus Reid on bass, Eddy Gladden on drums, and George Cables on piano (whose sharply rhythmic approach is shown off to fine effect here), Gordon blows through two lengthy tunes, each clocking in around the 20-minute mark.

Jazz / Bebop / Trumpet

Taken from three different, late-'40s sessions, Nostalgia features Navarro in the fine company of bebop stars like Dexter Gordon, Tadd Dameron, and Art Blakey. While looser sounding than the legendary sides the trumpeter cut for Blue Note, the tracks here still include the usual bevy of sharp Navarro solos, plus stellar contributions by all involved. The first session with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (one of the earliest recordings of the future Monk sideman), Dameron, and Blakey, finds Navarro mixing poised and fluid solo work with more intense high-note statements, demonstrating his masterful blend of both Miles Davis' cool approach and Dizzy Gillespie's incendiary technique.

During the two decades that followed the end of World War II in 1945, independent record labels flourished. Many of these micro labels succeeded by specializing in specific types of music that the more bland-minded giants—RCA, Columbia and Decca—largely ignored. In the process, these small labels wound up establishing beachheads for new music genres and cornering the market for the genres' best musicians and singers.

The sessions spawned so many firsts. On these CDs, you’ll hear the very first sessions led by DEXTER GORDON, KAI WINDING, ALLEN EAGER, J.J. JOHNSON (including sideman CECIL PAYNE’s first recordings ever), STAN GETZ, SONNY STITT and KENNY DORHAM, RAY BROWN, FATS NAVARRO, SERGE CHALOFF, KENNY HAGOOD, LEO PARKER, and BREW MOORE. Also included are reputation-making sessions for TADD DAMERON (both under his name and on another session led by Navarro), HOWARD McGHEE, KENNY CLARKE, and MILT JACKSON, whose bebop conversion changed the course of vibes playing forever. This set includes 216 tracks from 34 sessions across 10 CDs, with many alternate takes so you can evaluate the evolution of a tune as the music itself was evolving. It’s taken nearly 70 years to put this collection together, and it’s a good bet nothing like it will appear again in your lifetime.

From November 14 to 16 in 1985, the Joe Henderson trio held court at the Village Vanguard for a legendary 10-set engagement, some of which was recorded for Blue Note and released in 1986 as two volumes under the declarative banner The State of the Tenor. The saxophone titan was 48 at the time, and sat comfortably at the top of the heap among his peers. The great pugilist of the instrument, his muscular approach was reflective of the brash sensibility of the '80s; the heavy hitters joining him onstage, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster, complemented Henderson's take-no-prisoners style with a sense of airy restraint, swinging big when they needed to fill in the negative space.
