Orchestral arrangements are by Johnny Mandel, Anthony Wilson and Alan Broadbent. A deluxe edition contains a bonus disc featuring versions of the songs with just Streisand's vocals and Krall's quartet. To promote the album, Streisand performed for one night only on September 26 at the Village Vanguard some forty-eight years after she opened for Miles Davis at the same venue. As the sun was setting on yet another New York autumn, the lights began to flicker on all across the world's most exciting city. It was a particularly beautiful and sultry evening - and, high atop Manhattan, the romance of the legendary Rainbow Room was in all its glory - a truly perfect match for the magnificent voice and presence of Jane Monheit.

It's impossible not to grab for comparables when it comes to Lisa Ekdahl. With this singer, everyone does. Always. Blossom Dearie is one of the names repeatedly dredged up, as though Dearie's high octaved but sultry and sophisticated sound could be compared side-by-side with Ekdahl's childish tremor. Diana Krall is another name evoked beside Ekdahl's, though this comparison is nothing short of silly. Sure: both are sinuous blondes who look devastating in slinky gowns and both have had more than a flirt with jazz, but Ekdahl sounds as much like Krall as she does Chet Baker. That is to say: not at all.

The piano-playing singer Patricia Barber has quite a pearl of 12 standards on Nightclub with three stellar trios, including three tracks with Charlie Hunter's eight-string guitar. The incomparable bassist Marc Johnson also adds supple support on a few tunes and has a very tasty solo on "Yesterdays".
