"The inspiration for Hugo Distler’s gem of a Christmas narrative can be found in the German-language protestant sacred music of the early baroque era, especially the music of Heinrich Schütz. Drawing on Schütz’s example, Distler composed his Christmas story exclusively for vocalists – soloists and a 4-8-voiced ensemble – in what is, in Distler’s own words, described as an “Oratorium mit kammermusika- lishem Charakter”.

German conductor Otto Klemperer attended the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt-am-Main, studied violin and piano at the Klindworth-Scharwenka and Stern Conservatories in Berlin, and composition with the German composer Pfitzner. He made his début in Berlin in 1905, where he conducted fifty performances of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, not a work that would now be identified with Klemperer's serious and profoundly personal approach to music. Shortly afterwards, he visited Gustav Mahler in Vienna and impressed the composer by playing a scherzo from a Mahler symphony by memory at the piano.

During the eighteenth century an oratorio was the dramatic setting of an action that was mostly of sacred character and was represented by several persons as well as by a choir and an orchestra. Various plot elements – even dramatic ones – determined the character of the particular composition. This also applies to the present Christmas Oratorio, which was pieced together in this form not by Telemann himself but for this new pre- sentation as a so-called pasticcio, a form that enjoyed popularity already in the eighteenth century.

The Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart is performing all these cantatas in chronological order exactly 300 years later. The 23 concerts in all are taking place in and around Stuttgart; the refined live recordings are being released in this CD series on the Hanssler Classic label. The performances follow the latest state of Bach research documented in the new 2022 catalogue of Bach's works BWV3. The ensemble of the Bachakademie, the Gaechinger Cantorey, plays under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann. For this purpose it comprises the instrumentalists and up to four vocalists per voice, including the soloists, all specialists in their field, as Bach himself wished it. This is a vision that only now can be fulfilled in its ideal form. To this day the music will inspire its audience to devotion, challenge them to reflect and make them glad. It addresses questions of faith and comes to terms with particular situations of human life.

Das Kleine Konzert is an international constituted Baroque orchestra, which is closely associated in its work with the Rheinische Kantorei. Hermann Max's elaborate representation of the Affekte including operatic dramatic effects requires a close cooperation with the instrumentalists. Since 1980 the Rheinische Kantorei has had its own baroque orchestra, Das Kleine Konzert. The name is modelled on that of ‘Das Große Konzert’ orchestra, which was foundedc in Leipzig in 1746 and was for a long time directed by Johann Adam Hiller before becoming, towards the end of the 18th century, the Gewandhaus Orchestra.

5 years ago the Munich Radio Orchestra under Andrew Parrott performed Mozart's Singspiel 'Die verstellte Gärtnerin' - the rarely performed German version of 'La finta gardiniera', which can now finally be released on cpo. A top cast is assembled here: Sandrine Piau, Lydia Teuscher and Julian Prégardien, among others. When this opera was premiered, Mozart was 19 years old - an age at which most composers had not even begun. Wolfgang Amadeus' career as a musician - and as a composer - had been in full swing for several years, however. The work belongs to the genre of opera buffa, within which it follows the type of opera semiseria (half opera) popular at the time. Accordingly, in addition to buffa parts, there are also semi-seria parts and even a pure seria part. The music is of great richness. Mozart shows himself here as a true master of opera buffa. At the same time, the music already points beyond these to masterpieces such as Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. The first two acts of the opera contain large-scale, effective finales.
