The singularity of Dionne Warwick is defined by what the singer isn't as much as what she is. Although Warwick grew up singing in church, she is not a gospel singer. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan are clear influences, but she is not a jazz singer. R&B is also part of her background, yet she is not really a soul singer, either, at least not in the sense that Aretha Franklin was. Sophisticated is a word often used to describe Warwick's musical approach and the music she sings, but she is not a singer of standards such as Lena Horne or Nancy Wilson. A pop singer of a sort with an aching yet detached alto voice, In all likelihood, Warwick could only have emerged out of the Brill Building environment of post-Elvis Presley, pre-Beatles pop in the early '60s. That's when she hooked up with Burt Bacharach and Hal David, songwriters and producers who tailored their unusually complicated songs for her distinctive instrument.

It’s just over 40 years since global music icon Dionne Warwick signed with Arista Records marking a defining fifteen-year chapter in the star-studded career of the Lifetime Achievement and multi-Grammy-winning songstress, celebrated here with this first-of-its-kind box set of her (159) recordings for the label. Included are (29) bonus tracks, with nine of the twelve albums as expanded editions of the original Arista LPs, with remastering by Nick Robbins. The deluxe 64-page booklet (with artwork by Roger Williams) includes detailed essays on each album by SoulMusic.com/SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan (who credits Dionne’s mid-60s hits as fuelling his passion for soul music), with quotes from Dionne, Clive Davis and producer Steve Buckingham.

"Dionne" is a 1979 album by the vocalist Dionne Warwick. It was recorded during the winter of 1978–79, and was released in the spring of 1979. The LP was originally issued as number AB-4230 in the Arista Catalog. The album stands as the biggest selling album of Warwick's career, being certified Platinum in the U.S. for sales in excess of 1 million copies. The album was produced by Barry Manilow, who was paired with Warwick by Arista Records founder Clive Davis. "I'll Never Love This Way Again" was certified Gold by the RIAA, and both it and "Deja Vu" were Grammy winners in 1980. The album was Warwick's first album to be certified Platinum.

Dionne Warwick's greatest hits from 1979-1990 are covered in this well done retrospective. Personally, I find Warwick's mid to late 60's career much more appealing in terms of material and vocal production, but there are several stand outs on this CD nevertheless.
Aside from the obvious "That's What Friends Are For" with Gladys, Elton, and Stevie, this CD contains many mini-gems like a rousing Bee-Gees backed "Heartbreaker", a poignant love farewell ballad with "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" and a powerful pop "No Night So Long". All three of these songs were top 40 hits, not surprisingly, since they are meticulously written and produced to fit Dionne's smokey vocals.
Of the 3 duets included, the only one that strikes any chords is "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye" and not because of the song itself, but because Luther Vandross and Dionne Warwick sing together with so much emotion. By listening to! this track it's easy to see that Warwick was perhaps Vandross's biggest influence, as he himself has acknowledged many a time. One can't help but feel as if the baton is being passed to a younger generation.
Most notably perhaps, this CD has the distinction of containing Dionne's last "quality" vocals. Her 90's work has been somewhat hindered by her innability to produce the sound she used to in the 60's and 70's. Although not as flexible as it was in that period, her voice thru the 80's, was still a force to be reckoned with.

SoulMusic Records' top-tier stewardship of Dionne Warwick's catalog continues with Sure Thing: The Warner Bros. Recordings 1972-1977, a six-disc package that neatly fits beside the label's likewise comprehensive Déjà Vu: The Arista Recordings 1979-1994. Warwick was positioned for success with Warner. With seven masterly Top Ten pop hits spanning seven years to her credit, the singer had left Scepter Records to sign what Variety reported in 1971 as the most lucrative recording contract signed by a female artist. Warner rolled out the proverbial red carpet. Despite the involvement of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the songwriting/production team behind all of those Scepter smashes, 1972's Dionne got the era off to a slow start. A bad omen of sorts was that its one charting single was neither produced nor written by Warwick's then-seemingly inseparable partners (who soon split).

Dionne Warwick's career was revived when she teamed with Barry Manilow on this 1979 LP. Manilow's production of such heavily orchestrated numbers as "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" put Warwick back in the spotlight, as she once again sounded confident and compelling.

The Seventies were not good to Dionne Warwick(e) until this 1979 release. With the huge exception of a 1974 duet with the Spinners, the number-one "Then Came You", she hadn't cracked the Top Thirty since "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" at the beginning of the decade. A move from Scepter Records to mighty Warner Brothers, and a famous addition of an "e" to her last name, did not produce results.
