Although discrete geometry has a rich history extending more than 150 years, it abounds in open problems that even a high-school student can understand and appreciate. Some of these problems are notoriously difficult and are intimately related to deep questions in other fields of mathematics. But many problems, even old ones, can be solved by a clever undergraduate or a high-school student equipped with an ingenious idea and the kinds of skills used in a mathematical olympiad.

This book provides an overview to those most important modern and traditional methods of masonry analysis that are able to capture the discrete internal built-up of masonry structures. Such methods are available in a wide variety today – from computational packages based on classical graphical statics techniques through discrete element methods or the most sophisticated no-tension semi-continuum models – , and this book reviews their theoretical foundations, as well as their advantages and preferable fields of application, also calling the attention on their limitations so that the reader could build up a critical view of the choices they have when attacking a masonry mechanics problem. The book gives a basis for the readers to become able to develop their own methods, inspired either by classical graphical statics, or by any modern technique they find promising.

Discrete optimization is an important area of applied mathematics which lies at the intersection of several disciplines and covers both theoretical and practical aspects. This book is the result of a Special Issue entitled ‘Advances and Novel Approaches in Discrete Optimization’. In the call for papers for this issue, I asked for submissions presenting new theoretical results, structural investigations, new models, and algorithmic approaches as well as new applications of discrete optimization problems. Among the possible subjects were integer programming, combinatorial optimization, optimization problems of graphs and networks, scheduling, logistics, and transportation, to name but a few.
