It's been a long time since that late May, 2013 week in Luleå, Sweden, where pianist Django Bates and his Belovèd Trio first collaborated with the renowned Norrbotten Big Band. Fully documented in the All About Jazz article Django Bates: From Zero to Sixty in Five Days, Bates, bassist Petter Eldh and drummer Peter Bruun, along with other non-Norrbotteners, including guitarist Markus Pesonen, tubaist Daniel Herskedal and trombonist/vocalist Ashley Slater, made the lengthy trek to this small coastal town, located just 100 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle (and already experiencing 22 hours of daylight), to collaborate with Norrbotten for an appearance at the first edition of Luleå's New Music Festival. The objective was for Bates and his band mates to bring a brand new book of music to life, the pianist largely expanding arrangements of Belovèd's existing repertoire, but also including a commissioned new work from the festival.

Django Bates, a colorful and often humorous British jazz musician who plays piano, keyboards, and Eb horn, won the prestigious Jazzpar Prize in 1997. This CD, which teams him on various tracks with the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra and a large band called Delightful Precipice, was recorded in Denmark when Bates was receiving the prize. With the exception of a witty remaking of "New York, New York," all of the selections are Bates originals, including such colorful titles as "The Loneliness of Being Right," "The Importance of Boiling Water," "Peculiar Terms or Physical Intimacy," and "Nights at the Circus." In addition to Bates, key soloists include Iain Ballamy on alto and soprano, tenor-saxophonist Tomas Franck, and guitarist Chico Lindvall. Well worth checking out.

Eight years after Blue Maqams, Anouar Brahem returns with a poignant project, titled after a line of verse by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, which asks "Where should the birds fly, after the last sky?" Graceful chamber pieces for oud, cello, piano and bass subtly address the metaphysical question and its broad resonances in a troubled time. While drawing upon the traditional modes of Arab music, Brahem has consistently sought to engage with the wider world, too, and found inspiration in many sources from different cultures.
