The totally irrepressible creativity and ever-unconventional spirit of Django Bates swings into a completely new and unpredicted sphere. In collaboration with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and Eggs Laid By Tigers, Django has reimagined the seminal Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the most significant Rock album of all time. With his overpoweringly creative spirit, his anarchic sense of humour and his incredible level of musicality, approaching the arrangement process with a manifesto of 'Freedom, not Licence', Django's work is typically inventive and visionary. Holding on to the original structures and keys, he gracefully folds his own colours, rhythms and sound into the music, resulting in a thoroughly kaleidoscopic examination of this iconic album.

Three brilliant improvisers join Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem in this album, recorded in New York in May 2017. For Brahem and Dave Holland the album marks a reunion: they first collaborated 20 years ago on the very widely-acclaimed Thimar album, a trio recording with John Surman. Brahem meets Jack DeJohnette for the first time here, but Holland and DeJohnette have, of course, been frequent musical partners over the last half-century, beginning with ground-breaking work with Miles Davis: their collaborations are legendary. British pianist Django Bates also rises superbly to the challenge of Brahem’s compositions. And Anouar in turn is inspired to some of his most outgoing playing.

Marius Neset? This is a name you are going to hear a whole lot more. This astonishingly gifted 25 year old saxophonist/composer is releasing his second album on Edition Records and it will simply blow you away. Golden Xplosion, also the title of Marius' band, features one of the hottest quartets anywhere. Pianist Django Bates needs no introduction - the names Human Chain, Loose Tubes and Storm Chaser, his latest project, will suffice. His playing here lends the music an orchestral quality and the textures he adds even on acoustic piano are just gorgeous. Bassist Jasper Hoiby's own Edition CD Phronesis Live was one of the jazz hits of 2010.

The 29-year-old internationally acclaimed Norwegian saxophonist-composer Marius Neset takes another bold step forward into the art of contemporary extended ensemble writing on his debut recording Lion for ACT. It’s a collaboration with the renowned Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a project-based collective that since its formation in 1999 has toured Norway with stellar musicians that include Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman. Neset originally received a commission to compose for the orchestra in 2011 for a concert at the 2012 Molde Jazz Festival. “After the premiere in Molde, these compositions felt so special that we decided to record this album and play many more concerts with it.” he says.

Julian Argüelles, the saxophonist and composer who emerged on the Loose Tubes wave in the 1980s, now has an international reputation for both his playing and his powerful writing, but this tribute to South Africa’s world-jazz impact highlights his gifts as an arranger. Argüelles appears here with his drummer brother Steve, and with pianist Django Bates – all of them having worked with late lamented South African exiles including Chris McGregor and Dudu Pukwana. Those influences course through this effervescent set, on which the Argüelles siblings, Bates, and the soloists of the punchy Frankfurt Radio Bigband bring some timelessly thrilling music back to life. Pukwana’s pounding classic Mra Khali gets a pin-sharp ensemble treatment that doesn’t cramp its old joyousness; Miriam Makeba’s swaying Retreat Song gets imaginatively talkative muted-trombone variations from Peter Fell and a swerving accordion-like keys break from Bates; the arrangement of Abdullah Ibrahim’s The Wedding hides the melody in a slow rapture; and the band’s hard-hit riffing on Pukwana’s gleeful Come Again makes you jump gratefully out of your skin. It’s a delightful album.

Let It Be Told is saxophonist and composer Julian Argüelles' second collaboration with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band on Basho Records, following Momenta (Basho SRCD 29-2). It is his twelfth album as leader. The album includes new arrangements of compositions by Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, Miriam Makeba as well as an atmospheric development of Abdullah Ibrahim's much loved composition The Wedding. As well as capturing his deep enthusiasm for and knowledge of the work of the The Blue Notes, it also represents his longstanding relationship with the musicians in the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.

Elliot Galvin is one of the rising stars of UK jazz. A superbly gifted composer and pianist, whose maverick imagination and magpie-like ability to blend a disparate world of influences into his own unique musical vision has seen him compared to Django Bates, although in truth he sounds like no one except himself. From deconstructing standards to creating his own microtonal melodica, Galvin s music is both playful and deadly serious, drawing on a wide range of influences from Keith Jarrett to Stravinsky, Ligetti, Deerhoof and the Beatles as well as the films of David Lynch, the Dada movement and the literature of James Joyce. A regular collaborator with Laura Jurd, he also plays in a free improv duo with Mark Sanders, but his main artistic vehicle is the Elliot Galvin Trio.

Helge Sunde is a 44-year-old Norwegian trombonist and composer who often works with jazz/classical composer Geir Lysne, sounds as if he checks out Hermeto Pascoal, Django Bates, Carla Bley, and British jazz and TV composer Colin Towns – and who has produced a cracker of a contemporary big-band album with this set. Sunde's Denada ensemble has produced powerful work before, but the balance of moods, melodic variety and arranging ingenuity on Finding Nymo (the sax-playing Nymo brothers Frode and Atle are star soloists) ought to raise his standing outside continental Europe. He throws listeners off the big-band scent with the eerie vocoder whispers at the start, but busy phrase-swapping between the horns, and arrhythmic ensemble riffs with solo-sax wails rising out of them introduce a Django Bates feel. When In Rome is a hooting, swaggering theme with revving engines and street noise, Valse Triste starts like a funeral lament and turns into a demonically waltzing dance, and the title track begins as tentative, sputtery improv, then coalesces into a melody. Guests Olka Konkova (piano) and Marilyn Mazur add flourishes to an already formidable set.
