At first glance, this looks like a very enticing collection, and in many ways it is: 53 songs covering a lot of the highlights and rarities in the band's history from 1963 through 1969. There are a few flaws, however, some of them minor and others potentially major, depending upon one's interests. For starters, it doesn't follow strict chronological order, opening with their biggest international hit, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," from the summer of 1964, and then proceeding backward through October of 1963 and "Cock-A-Hoop" to July of 1963 and their jazzy debut, "Why Should We Not." That's not a huge problem; though for anyone who isn't familiar with the history, it's going to require a little sorting out.

This is the sixth set in this comprehensive and excellent Handel edition from Warner. This volume deals with an important oratorio in the shape of "Saul" as well as the "Utrecht Te Deum" and the famous "Ode for St. Cecilia's Day" and "Alexander's Feast", another splendid cantata. The recordings date from the early 1970's to 1990 and come from the prolific Teldec stable under the indefatigable Nikolaus Harnoncourt who conducts in his exemplary no nonsense fashion. "Saul' is a fine interpretation although I still feel that John Eliot Gardiner comes to the core of the work better. "Ode for St. Cecilia's Day' is also given a pomp and circumstance treatment whilst the Utrecht Te Deum is winningly done. The team of soloists is also very good and the recordings are fine and well balanced in proper Teldec tradition.

A double-disc Manfred Mann hits set that adds a third disc for some DVD material, The Evolution of Manfred Mann surveys the entire career of one of British rock & roll's tightest and most energetic units. The first disc is '60s and early-'70s material, nearly all with classic Paul Jones vocals, while the second picks up the story with Manfred Mann's Earth Band and their series of, well, earthier recordings during the mid-to-late '70s (although the compilation extends well into the '90s).
