The music of The Lord of the Rings film series was composed, orchestrated, conducted and produced by Howard Shore. Shore wrote many hours of music for The Lord of the Rings, 10 hours of which have been released in the Complete Recordings CD/DVD boxed sets. Additional music, including alternate and unused compositions, was released with the book The Music of the Lord of the Rings. Shore composed the music in an emotional, operatic way, threading through the scores over 90 identified leitmotifs, which are categorized by the Middle-earth cultures to which they relate. The scores for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King won Academy Awards in 2002 and 2004. The latter film also won an Oscar statuette for Best Song, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

The group's fourth album, appearing ten months following After Bathing at Baxter's, isn't the same kind of leap forward that Baxter's represented from Surrealistic Pillow. Indeed, in many ways, Crown of Creation is a more conservative album stylistically, opening with "Lather," a Grace Slick original that was one of the group's very last forays (and certainly their last prominent one) into a folk idiom. Much of what follows is a lot more based in electric rock, as well as steeped in elements of science fiction (specifically author John Wyndham's book The Chrysalids) in several places, but Crown of Creation was still deliberately more accessible musically than its predecessor, even as the playing became more bold and daring within more traditional song structures.

It was sung in the film by Dorothy Lamour and is one of the songs most associated with the singer actress. Other notable versions one by Amen Corner, slightly altering the lyrics. Jimmy Mack is a pop/soul song that became a hit single by Martha and the Vandellas for Motowns Gordy imprint. Written and produced by Motown main creative team, Holland–Dozier, Jimmy Mack was the final Top 10 hit for the Vandellas in the United States. Sunshine Superman is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan.

ABBA remains the most successful act ever to come from Scandinavia. The group topped worldwide charts during the mid-to-late 1970s and gained widespread airplay during the early 1980s, selling many hit singles and albums. Indeed, the group sold "more than 350 million records, all but one being self-penned." They were the first act from the European continent to become a regular fixture on the charts of the anglophonic world (Britain, North America, and Australia), and their success subsequently opened the doors for many other European acts. Their lasting legacy is the legitimisation of the Swedish music industry as a mainstream player.

The eighth album from Marissa Nadler, For My Crimes, is the sound of turmoil giving way to truth.
