German baritone Benjamin Appl is Gramophone ‘Young Artist of the Year 2016’ and one of the stars of the European ‘Echo Rising Stars’ concert series. Appl is a former chorister of the famous German choir Regensburger Domspatzen, and now one of the most interesting artists of the new generation, with a great voice, charming personality and great stage presence. The new album presents wonderful music by Johann Sebastian Bach from famous as well as less known cantatas but also from the St Matthew Passion. It was recorded with the renowned Ensemble Concerto Köln, one of the leading ensembles for historically-informed performance practice.

Devised to celebrate his marriage to Constanze, but left unfinished at the composer's death, Mozart's Mass can clearly be traced back to the choral writing of Johann Sebastian Bach and his son, Carl Phillip Emmanuel. This musical genealogy is displayed here in a lavish double-chorus, double-orchestra feast where both works echo each other. No stranger to Mozart - the ensemble's recording of the Requiem was a Gramophone Award Winner and Grammy-nominated - Dunedin Consort puts its stamp on these most spectacular contributions to church music.

In the autumn of 2005 Hyperion released their complete Schubert song edition, some 18 years after they started recording. The composition of these songs spanned the same number of years. Between Lebenstraum … gesang in c”, a fragment dating from 1810 when he was thirteen and Der Taubenpost written a few weeks before his death late in 1828, Schubert set over 700 texts, mostly solo songs but also part songs and for ensemble. Ein „Begleitheft zur CD“ zeigt Partiturauschnitte und Bilder der Orchesterinstrumente. Ein Rätsel, quasi als „Lernkontrolle“, verlangt den routinierten Rätselkenner. Bleibt nachzutragen, dass das Beethoven Orchester Bonn unter Thomas Honickel die „unterbrochene“ Sinfonie selbstverständlich hochkompetent musiziert.
