El Sonido Nuevo is a popular collaboration between vibraphonist Cal Tjader and pianist Eddie Palmieri (who provided the arrangements). Despite the claims of greatness expressed in the liners ("a landmark in the history of Latin jazz"), much of the music is actually quite lightweight although enjoyable enough, and the easy listening melodies and accessible rhythms hold one's interest. Despite the changing personnel, Tjader is generally the lead voice, and he is in fine form even if the overall results are not all that memorable or unique.

Eddie Fisher was one of biggest stars of the first half of the 1950s, both as a singer and movie actor, and had more than 60 hits across the Billboard, Cash Box and UK charts. He was a singer very much of his era, with an old-school formal singing style that was ideally suited to the big-voiced ballads of the early ‘50s but did not translate well into the rock ‘n’ roll era, and he had his last Top 10 hit a few months after Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” topped the charts in 1956. This great value 80-track 3-CD set comprises all his chart entries on the Columbia, RCA-Victor, 7-Arts and ABC-Paramount labels from this era, plus selected A & B sides from his other singles during these years. It features his US and UK No. 1s with “Wish You Were Here”, “I’m Walking Behind You”, “Outside Of Heaven”, “Oh My Pa Pa” and “I Need You Now”, and includes his hits with The Marlin Sisters, Perry Como, Sally Sweetland and Hugo Winterhalter, plus a duet with Debbie Reynolds. It’s a comprehensive overview of his career as a chart artist, and an enjoyable showcase for his notable talents as a highly distinctive song stylist from a golden age of traditional pop.

Eddie Gomez is a brilliant bassist whose flexibility and quick reflexes make him an ideal accompanist (although his own albums tend to be a bit erratic jazz-wise). He grew up in New York and was with the Newport Festival Youth Band during 1959-1961. After studying at Juilliard, Gomez played with Rufus Jones' sextet, Marian McPartland (1964), Paul Bley (1964-1965), Giuseppe Logan, Gerry Mulligan, and Gary McFarland, among others. Gomez came to fame during his long period with the Bill Evans Trio (1966-1977).

Among the main protagonists credited with linking the big band era with the soul jazz scene that emerged during the late 1950s, Eddie Lockjaw Davis remains a notable influence on jazz saxophonists to this day. While perhaps not always displaying the finesse of his contemporaries, Davis produced a tone that was wholly unique and capable of emitting an aggressive, bluesy sound alongside lines of great tenderness and sensitivity. The flexibility of his playing lent itself to rhythm and blues, swing, hard bop and Latin jazz over the years, and while his early career featured Davis supporting some of the finest artists of the period, his greatest records came when he took up the role of bandleader, notably during his tenancy with the Prestige label. This collection features the eight albums by Eddie Lockjaw Davis as leader released on the Prestige label between 1958 and 1961.

The Flying Dutchman imprint BluesTime made it a specialty of modernizing old blues guys, bringing such stalwarts as T-Bone Walker, Otis Spann, and Big Joe Turner into the paisley-drenched, psychedelic late '60s. BluesTime also signed Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson to its label but, for a variety of reasons, the saxophonist didn't follow the label's directive on 1970's The Original Cleanhead, choosing to more or less adhere to the blend of blues, R&B, and bop that became his signature in the '40s, along with relying on a selection of familiar songs. Vinson does show some signs of settling into his role as an old pro – his voice, which surfaces often, is robust and gravelly, he prefers to ease back rather than push – and he's not adverse to giving "Juice Head Baby" space for an organ and horn section that makes it feel somewhat of its time.
