Daughter of the famous tenor García, himself a favourite of Gioachino Rossini, Pauline Viardot was originally destined to become a pianist (and was at one time tutored by Liszt) before the deaths of her father and singersister saw her re‐trained as a mezzo‐soprano by her mother. In 1839 she made her operatic debut in London, subsequently achieving renown on the concert and operatic stages of Great Britain, Germany and Russia in particular. Among her admirers in St Petersburg was the young Ivan Turgenev, later to become the best‐known author of his country in Europe and North America.

The revival of Spanish music of the Baroque period continues moving forward into the Classical era with this premiere recording of sonatas for "violin y bajo" – violin and bass – by Juan de Ledesma. The sonatas were rediscovered only in the late 1980s, and they're very elegantly presented here in a package adorned by a reproduction of a marvelous French fan of the period. There isn't anything of earthshaking importance among the five sonatas on the disc, but they're attractive pieces with some challenges for the violinist, and both players of the instruments and those with collections of Spanish music will find the release of interest. The booklet notes by violinist Blai Justo (in English, French, and German, with Spanish and Catalan additionally available online) point to Corelli's influence, but also note the presence of the galant style of the period, and it is the latter sound, with its atmosphere of charm and its relaxed procession of contrasting two-measure phrases, that predominates. The players do well to avoid a harpsichord accompaniment, using either a combination of cello and guitar or one or the other instrument alone.

Together with the string quartet, the Sonata for Violin and Piano has been one of the standard works of classical chamber music since the 18th century. The violinist Elisa van Beek and her piano accompanist Giorgos Karagiannis show the development of the violin sonata with contributions by Mozart, Brahms and Bartók. Elisa van Beek was born into a musical family in Germany. At the age of six she received her first piano lesson with Birgit Helber at the Music School in Trossingen. She also took lessons from her father and won first prize at the regional Jugend Musiziert music competition.

The term ‘toccata’ is associated with virtuoso music demanding the utmost dexterity of its performer. Elisa Netzer, winner of the 2015 ‘Suoni d’arpa’ International Harp Competition in Italy, presents a wide-ranging programme which includes her own arrangement of one of Alessandro Scarlatti’s harpsichord toccatas, popular pieces such as Khachaturian’s Oriental Dance and Toccata, original works for harp such as Nino Rota’s attractively neo-Classical Sarabanda e Toccata and the premiere of the brand new Toccare composed for her by Swiss composer Stephan Hodel.

Elisa Vellia was born and grew up in the heart of Greece, and was entranced by the music of her native country. At the age of 21, she left Athens for London, where she discovered the singular beauty of the Celtic harp. She devoted all her time to it, working with some of the major figures in the world of the Irish and Scottish harp, and took part in two recordings of Scottish music, Power and Honesty and After the Ceilidh. This musical passion inevitably led her to Brittany and its wealth of cultural riches. It was here that Elisa found the ideal place for her own music, that of a cultural identity without frontiers. On her album Voleur de Secrets (Robber of Secrets), Vellia's songs contain a mixture of poetry and singing in every accent and every tone of the Mediterranean. Her unique voice evokes the entire range of cultures this fascinating and mysterious sea has brought to the world. Jean-Luc Aimé's delicate and pure orchestration is enhanced by the presence of such exceptional musicians as Youval Micenmacher and Haig Yazdjian.
