After "Down and Out In Paris and London" topped my personal choices for last year it was inevitable that this was going to become part of my collection. I missed the first release of "A Place On the Shelf" last year and was pleased that the band saw fit to make it available to more people. This, a mere album of otherwise discarded tracks and unfinished demos, seems likely to be one of my favourites of this year already.

Duncan Mackay is a sadly forgotten British keyboardist who recorded two solo symphonic prog rock albums back in 70s along with few disks together with such little known bands like Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel & 10cc, while in 80s he joined Camel to record "Nude"…

The Shout! Factory label continued its series of reissues from progressive rock masters Emerson, Lake & Palmer with 2011's Live at the Mar y Sol Festival '72. Keyboardist Keith Emerson, vocalist/bass guitarist/guitarist Greg Lake, and drummer Carl Palmer were only three years into ELP and were riding high on their massive success at the time of the show on April 2, 1972, the second day of this three-day festival in steamy, scorching Puerto Rico. (Other acts on the bill included Alice Cooper, the Allman Brothers Band, B.B. King, Dr. John, Faces, J. Geils Band, and several lesser-known artists. It was a pivotal gig for a then essentially unknown Billy Joel. Several bands like Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac were scheduled to perform but either didn't show up or were prevented from playing due to a variety of logistical nightmares, including serious problems that promoter Alex Cooley was having with the Puerto Rican government)…

Early Broadcast From A Newly Formed ELP In 1971 Keith Emerson and Greg Lake first met in December 1969 when Emerson's band, The Nice, and Lake's band, King Crimson, were billed together for a series of concerts at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Emerson was looking to form a new group, and Lake wanted to leave King Crimson. During a sound check before one of the shows, Emerson described the first time he and Lake played together: "Greg was moving a bass line and I played the piano behind, and Zap! It was there. Auditions for a drummer led to the inclusion of former Atomic Rooster and Crazy World Of Arthur Brown sticks-man Carl Palmer, following which the new group settled on Emerson, Lake & Palmer or ELP as their moniker. ELP s debut album, recorded in 1970 with Lake producing, was issued in November the same year in the UK, and in January 1971 in the US. From September 1970 to June 1971, the band completed their first concert tour with shows across the UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. On 3rd June, the group performed an extraordinary show at Dusseldorf s Philipshalle, which was recorded for live radio and TV transmission. Concentrating largely on their debut (despite their sophomore album having already been released by this time) alongside a few choice rarities and some superb classical interpretations. Available here on CD for the first time, this superb concert illustrates just how fully formed ELP were, even at this early stage in their illustrious career.

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
The debut album from this German band is an ode to the heavy sounds not alien to Atomic Rooster. While you discover the opener The Clown And The Queen, you should be blown away by the power of the Hammond organ and the wild vocals.
