"The Return of the Manticore" is a 4-disc retrospective on the career of the band Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It was released in 1993, and features several new recordings of previously released songs, most notably a studio recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition," presented in Dolby Surround Sound. Also, a live recording of Dave Brubeck's "Rondo" features on disc 2; the track, although performed by ELP in concert from the band's inception (as it had been by Keith Emerson's previous band The Nice), was previously unreleased on any live or studio album by ELP.

Excellent addition to any prog-rock music collection
ELP returned from an extended hiatus in 1977, sweetly oblivious to the fact that progressive rock was on the decline.

Set 3: Wiltern Theatre, LA, USA March 1993 (2-CD Set). No less than five discs serve up four phenomenal ELP concerts in the final installment of a series that remains one of the most audaciously brilliant in any band's catalog. We begin with excerpts from shows recorded at the Anaheim Stadium in 1974 as the band toured Brain Salad Surgery and Wheeling Colosseum in 1977 on the Works tour – a longer look at both would have been preferable, of course, but we're dealing with original bootleg releases here, the source of every recording in this series, so what you see is what you get.

Upon its release, the 1973 LP Brain Salad Surgery had been hailed as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's masterpiece. A long tour ensued that left the trio flushed and begging for time off. Before disbanding for three years, they assembled a three-LP live set (something of a badge of achievement at the time, earned by Yes in 1973 with Yessongs and, somewhat more dubiously, Leon Russell with Leon Live)…

By the late 1980's, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were more than a decade away from the period of their greatest success. They had released a few albums in the late 1970's, and although they still sold reasonably well, neither the critics nor the public were especially thrilled by them. After taking a break for half a decade or so, in the mid-'80s, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake were ready to reunite. Carl Palmer, however, was busy drumming with Asia. So Emerson and Lake hooked up with Rainbow drummer Cozy Powell for one album as Emerson, Lake & Powell, and broke up shortly thereafter…

3CD box set presented with enhanced booklet. Musical visionaries Keith Emerson and Greg Lake planned to re-form ELP in 1984, however drummer Carl Palmer was unavailable. Into the frame stepped the legendary Cozy Powell, best known for his work with Rainbow and Whitesnake. Included is the band's one and only studio release: 'Emerson Lake and Powell' featuring three bonus tracks, their live album 'Live in Concert' and a CD of rehearsals, 'The Sprocket Sessions', only previously released in the 90s as a bootleg. The collection includes sleeve notes by Jerry Ewing, editor of PROG Magazine, who takes a forensic look at the band's short but impactful history. The band's self-titled studio album delivers material familiar in style to ELP with long progressive rock tracks, mellow ballads, and a classical theme ('Mars, the Bringer of War' by Gustav Holst, a piece previously performed by Lake during his tenure in King Crimson). All recordings have been re-mastered by renowned engineer Andy Pearce. This collection has been curated with the blessing of the Emerson, Lake and Powell families. If you are a fan of ELP, you cannot afford to have this part of the Emerson and Lake history missing from your collection.
