Flutist Eric Lamb exhibits his incredible dynamism with this collection of iconic works from the repertoire. Exploring the depth of his musical interests, Lamb takes us on a journey from the 18th century, with JS Bach’s seminal A-minor Partita for solo flute, straight through to the 21st, with Austrian composer Roland Freisitzer’s hypnotic ’Music for Eric Lamb’. Along the way, Eric picks up his dear friend, the versatile soprano Anu Komsi, as he explores all of the different characters that can be portrayed by the flute.

“ICONS 2” is the follow-up collection to my 2017 “ICONS” recording (OR0030). Like the first collection, the pieces included here are corner stones of the flute repertoire and are works that accompany me through my performance and teaching career. For this album, I have focused on six composers from various moments in the 20th and 21st centuries whose diverse musical language, artistic vision and fearlessness helped and help shape today’s musical landscape. These six composers are led in by one of the most important names in Western Classical music history: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

The four stylistically contrasting concertos of this recording represent the technical and expressive range achieved by Johann Joachim Quantz during his long career in the service of the King. Although the music of the Baroque period was becoming less fashionable and being favoured by the gallant style of composers like Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Quantz continued to write in a more conservative style, which pleased the Kings tastes. Flutist Eric Lamb is in demand internationally as a concerto soloist, recitalist, concert curator and chamber musician.

(Re)inventions Vol. 2 is the much-anticipated continuation of ensemble paladino’s successful collaborative adaptation project of musical examples from Bach’s keyboard works, this time for flute, viola and cello. The entry point of this exploration are Bach’s fifteen Sinfonias, BWV 787 to 801, followed by a carefully selected collection of three-part fugues and preludes. The Sinfonias are a natural pedagogical extension of the two-part inventions and were considered by Bach to be musical exercises “… to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition.” Going outward from the fifteen Sinfonias and deeper into Bach’s catalogue of keyboard works one finds many lovely examples of three-voice counterpoint. Alongside the Sinfonias, the ensemble has chosen various Preludes and Fugues.

"Janárceková's intellectually unpretentious expressionist music never runs the risk of becoming cliche-infected: her will to express herself and her awareness of fragmentariness combine in a subtle sensuality of sound. At every moment the music seems to be 'appropriate': far removed from triviality, and away from fashionable contemplative platitudes." (Dirk Wieschollek) The Slovak Quasars ensemble's conductor Ivan Buffa also doubles as the piano soloist with the Bamberg Symphony in the piano concerto of Viera Janárceková, who surely must be counted as one of the most distinguished female voices in today's European composition landscape.
