Alexandre Bloch juxtaposes two French composers on this disc. First of all, Maurice Ravel, with the Rapsodie espagnole, his first major work for orchestra alone, written at the age of thirty-two, and La Valse, premiered thirteen years later and which he himself described as a ‘fantastical and fatal whirlwind’. And then Benjamin Attahir, born in Toulouse in 1989, one of the most gifted and prominent composers of the new generation. Commissioned by the Orchestre National de Lille and recorded here for the first time, it is a concerto for serpent that showcases the splendid sound of this low wind instrument, a member of the brass family even though it is made of wood covered in leather. ‘Adh Dhohr is part of a cycle I wanted to write focusing on the Salah, the daily rhythm of Muslim devotion’, says Benjamin Attahir. ‘This piece refers to the noon prayer, when the sun is at its zenith . . . The musical form is constructed around this “zenithal” moment and unfolds concentrically around it. (…) I wanted – as in oriental music – to return to the strictest monophony, which is a rather unusual project in concertante music. Soloist and orchestra share a single voice between them.’

Augustin Hadelich is an Italian violinist. Born to German parents, Hadelich was raised in a musical family with two brothers who played cello and piano, while he took up the violin at age five. Hadelich developed into a prodigy, playing violin and piano and composing as a sideline. Hadelich suffered burns in a fire in 1999, which required treatment in Germany and more than a year of recuperation before he could play the violin again. He then graduated from the Instituto Mascagni in Livorno with honors, and studied with Joel Smirnoff at the Juilliard School, receiving his graduate diploma in 2005 and his artist diploma in 2007.

Pierre Monteux had one of the longest active careers as a conductor, probably exceeded among famous musicians by Pablo Casals and Leopold Stokowski. He retained a youthful appearance with black hair (although his mustache was white), and was expressed by any suggestion that the color was not natural. He said anyone who said otherwise was welcome to come with shampoo, alcohol, or whatever to wash his hair and prove the color was natural. "Also you might mention that I have all my teeth," he added. This story also illustrates his sense of humor and genial nature. It is often stated that the man made no enemies, or even that he was loved by all.

Diapason, a world-famous French magazine specializing in classical music, selects historical performances of masterpieces from the history of music, and reprints them with new mastering in a series called ``Les Indispensables de Diapason''. The definitive edition chosen by Diapazon.”
The 165th volume in the series is a collection of works by French composer Edouard Lalo. Pierre Fournier will play Lalo's ``Cello Concerto,'' which was inspired by Saint-Saens' Cello Concerto No. 1. It plays with a tone that evokes the beauty and dignity of the cello, which was called the prince of the cello. ``Namuna'' was originally created as a ballet, and after its first performance, the composer arranged it himself and created a suite version. This is a recording of French conductor Paul Paray leading the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Lalo's masterpiece, the Spanish Symphony, is a gorgeous combination of legendary violinists Leonid Kogan and Kirill Kondrashin, allowing you to fully enjoy the famous performances of Lalo's works from yesteryear. A fascination with his Spanish heritage would be a recurring theme in many of Ravel’s creations. Mysterious melodies weave delicately throughout his early work Rapsodie espagnole, punctuated by bursts of Spanish-inspired fanfares and Habanera dance rhythms.

It is no wonder that Lorin Maazel's recording of L'Enfant et les Sortileges won the Grand Prix International du Disque prize in 1961. It well deserves it. Every detail is taken into perfection. This is art for art. The same goes with the other works presented in this two disc set. This set is vital for the fans of Ravel's opera music, and a great way for beginners in classical music to get to know these works by the great French composer.
