This release from the Latvian Radio Choir, conducted by Sigvards Kłava, features timeless choral works by three composers from Russia and Latvia: Yuri Falik, Artūrs Maskats and Georgy Sviridov. These 20th and 21st century choral works present the profound and sacred, which is to be found and enjoyed in many areas of our lives, from nature and the seasons to personal relationships and love. The Latvian Choir’s previous release on Ondine – Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil – was chosen as ‘Record of the Month’ for Gramophone Magazine and also received a nomination for ‘best choral disc’ in the 2013 Gramophone Awards. The Latvian Radio Choir is considered one of the best chamber choirs in Europe.

The fascinating itinerary to which the listener of this Da Vinci Classics album is invited touches a series of little-known masterpieces written for unaccompanied solo violin in the twentieth century. Although Bach was not the first to state, with his music, that violins did not perforce need the harmonic support of an accompaniment, his six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are the first, impressive example of how that belief could be embodied in music. In spite of this, and of the extreme beauty of this cycle, the works it contained had to wait for several decades before gaining acceptance, in their original form, on the concert scene. A kind of horror vacui was felt, and it seemed necessary to provide the solo violin with a background against which it could shine.

In her debut recording for harmonia mundi, Lucile Boulanger explores the facets of Antoine Forqueray’s career as a virtuoso instrumentalist: adept in a wide range of Italian repertoire and skilled at transcribing works originally intended for the violin, he could try it on for size, as it were, before settling on a different medium. With the viola da gamba, he extended the technique of playing it far beyond the norm, confronting the performer with fiendishly difficult challenges… which have been met brilliantly by the hugely talented foursome heard here.
