A harmonically advanced cool-toned and subtle guitarist, Jim Hall was an inspiration to many guitarists, including some (such as Bill Frisell) who sound nothing like him. Hall attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and studied classical guitar in Los Angeles with Vicente Gómez. He was an original member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet (1955-1956), and during 1956-1959 was with the Jimmy Giuffre Three. After touring with Ella Fitzgerald (1960-1961) and sometimes forming duos with Lee Konitz, Hall was with Sonny Rollins' dynamic quartet in 1961-1962, recording The Bridge. He co-led a quartet with Art Farmer (1962-1964), recorded on an occasional basis with Paul Desmond during 1959-1965 (all of their quartet performances are collected on a Mosaic box set), and then became a New York studio musician…

Levon Helm's early solo albums, made in the 1970s after the Band initially broke up, were hit-and-miss affairs, but his first solo studio release in 25 years represents a rich return to his Southern roots. With co-production and musical support from daughter Amy (of Ollabelle) and multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (long a mainstay of Bob Dylan's band), Helm gives organic unity and rough-hewn vitality to a selection of Cajun fiddle waltzes, country blues, hardscrabble folk, and some more contemporary material (from the likes of Steve Earle and Buddy and Julie Miller). Following his recovery from throat cancer, Helm's voice has a slightly different timbre, but his phrasing is unmistakable as the same vocalist who sang "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Rag Mama Rag." With Amy providing harmony and duet vocals and Levon's drumming evoking his signature work with the Band, Helm takes material from a variety of sources and makes it all his own.

This Gambit disc compiles two separate sessions (Art and Perception) led by Art Farmer, made separately from the Jazztet (which he co-led with Benny Golson). The 1960 recordings featured on the first album featured Tommy Flanagan, Tommy Williams and Albert "Tootie" Heath with the trumpeter, playing show tunes and chestnuts in an elegant fashion that has stood the test of time. On the latter LP recorded the following year, Harold Mabern replaces Flanagan and Roy McCurdy takes over for Heath, with Farmer switching to the richer-toned flugelhorn. In addition to standards, the quartet explores two fine if unjustly obscure originals by the leader, along with the mellow "The Day After" (penned by Jazztet sideman Tom McIntosh). After being out of print for decades, both albums were issued individually overseas, as well as being joined for Art & Perception and collected with recordings by the Jazztet and Benny Golson in a Mosaic limited-edition boxed set. No matter how it is acquired, both sessions are among Art Farmer's best work of the '60s.

The Farmer Boys were an American country music duo consisting of Bobby Adamson and Woody Murray. Adamson and Murray were both natives of Arkansas who met in California when they sang a song together around a jukebox. In 1952 they started working together, singing at local dances with Adamson on lead vocals and Murray on harmony and guitar. Herb Henson gave them a spot on his television show, which broadcast out of Bakersfield, California on KERO. They eventually became nightly performers on the show, and Henson gave them the name The Farmer Boys, since they lived in Farmersville.
