Regina Spektor’s last album, 2004’s Soviet Kitsch, garnered praise from Time, Rolling Stone, Spin, Vanity Fair, The New York Times and many others. But this Russian-born, Bronx-bred singer-songwriter-pianist, who emerged from the NYC cafe circuit, continues to expand her vision. On Begin To Hope, produced by David Kahne (The Strokes, Sublime, Sugar Ray), she broadens her palette with electric guitar, drum machines and seductive electronic loops, finding new canvases for her provocative vocal style. Hope for pop has arrived with Regina Spektor.

There is a combustible quality about newcomer Rachael Yamagata that for a lot of listeners will call to mind Fiona Apple: A first spin of Happenstance can make you itch with the thrill of discovery, but it also leaves behind the impression that its singer is vaguely dangerous; which is exactly what makes these songs so absorbing. "Everybody's talking how I can't be your love," she pouts in a melodically engineered stutter on opener "Be Be Your Love," one of several tracks pairing her with a piano that seems to take the brunt of the punishment for her wrecked relationships. The rest of the disc unravels with similar heat: When she growls in her full-time rasp that "(You've) worn me down/like a road/I did everything you told" on the very infectious indie-rock leaning "Worn Me Down," you believe her.

Brothers Osborne have delivered what Rolling Stone describes as “a nice balance of rough and smooth” on their new, self-titled, fourth studio album, newly available on EMI Records Nashville. The new set is the brothers’ first with producer Mike Elizondo (Keith Urban, Turnstile, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow) after three albums with Jay Joyce, the studio presence who John and TJ say “helped make us what we are today.” For the new project, the duo gave Elizondo the freedom to curate his own band of studio musicians, including Paul McCartney’s drummer Abe Laboriel Jr.
