Ummagumma is the fourth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd. It is a double album and was released on 7 November 1969 by Harvest Records. The first disc consists of live recordings from concerts at Mothers Club in Birmingham and the College of Commerce in Manchester that contained part of their normal set list of the time, while the second contains solo compositions by each member of the band recorded at Abbey Road Studios. The artwork was designed by regular Floyd collaborators Hipgnosis and features a number of pictures of the band combined to give a Droste effect. It was the last album cover to feature the band.

The Dark Side of the Moon was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unheard combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, the band resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the bandmembers had previously worked on. The film Zabriskie Point, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). Waters rewrote "Breathe" after its appearance on his and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin's score for The Body, a surreal medical documentary. Floyd and their longtime engineer, Alan Parsons, used a multitude of sound effects, from stereophonically projected footsteps and planes flying overhead ("On the Run") to a roomful of ringing clocks ("Time"). Further adding to the record's mystique, barely audible spoken passages were sprinkled throughout; a result of hours of interviews of random Abbey Road occupants about their views on insanity, violence, and death. Floyd must have struck a nerve: The Dark Side of the Moon remained on Billboard's albums chart for an astounding 14 years. It made Pink Floyd a household name, elevating them to the level of the Rolling Stones and the Who in the rock pantheon.

For those who spent the whole of the 1970s actually living on the dark side of the moon rather than listening to it, A Collection of Great Dance Songs offers an opportunity to hear some of the most timeless, thoughtful, and influential rock music ever made by rich, bitter Englishmen. The album's title certainly seems less deceptive now, considering just how much of the Floyd's instrumental ambience eventually seeped into the techno and dance scenes of the '90s. Initially released during one of those yawning epochs between studio albums (namely, The Wall and The Final Cut) this best-of collection cherry picks from Pink Floyd's 1970s material–the era when the band (and they were a band in those days) bestrode the stadiums of the world like light-show leviathans and sold records by the tons–and is only undermined by the omission of sprawling masterpieces such as "Echoes" and "Atom Heart Mother" (such were the time limitations of the old vinyl format). Never mind the dance floor, this a great portable Pink Floyd collection for long car journeys.

Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY – April 22nd, 1970
Port Chester was the eighth show of Pink Floyd’s 1970 Spring US tour following two dates at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia and was their final show in the New York metropolitan area (they also played SUNY Stony Brook and the Fillmore East). This was also the longest US tour to date and it is fascinating to hear material from the recent Zabriskie Point and More soundtracks evolving into lengthy jams alongside familiar songs from Ummagumma as well as the transition into the Atom Heart Mother period. Despite the inclusion of some Barrett-era pieces, this is the sound of The Floyd spreading their wings and finding their own identity.

Pink Floyd pioneered an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Celestial concerns surfaced early in the band's career, with their 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn containing the epic instrumental "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Astronomy Domine," a psychedelic masterwork sung by their early leader, Syd Barrett. That initial album and its accompanying singles were groundbreaking psychedelic works, pairing astral voyages with deep explorations of British eccentricity. Floyd continued to pursue this mix after Barrett's premature departure in 1968, with the group spending five years wandering through experiments as they charted the outer reaches of their limitless sound. Bassist Roger Waters emerged as the group's chief songwriter, developing a deep fascination with mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society.

Pink Floyd claim they had no intention of recording another live album when they began the Division Bell tour, but performing The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety convinced the group to release another double-live set, called Pulse. There's no question that the group is comprised of talented musicians, including the number of studio professionals that augmented the trio on tour. Whether they're inspired musicians is up to debate. A large part of Pink Floyd's live show is based on the always impressive visuals; on the Division Bell tour, they closed each show with an unprecedented laser extravaganza. In order for the visuals and the music to coincide, the group needed to play the sets as tightly as possible, with little improvisation. Consequently, an audio version of this concert, separated from the visuals, is disappointing. Pink Floyd play the greatest hits and the new songs professionally, yet the versions differ only slightly from the original recordings, making Pulse a tepid experience.

One of the most iconic and influential albums of all time, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. An early version of "The Dark Side of The Moon" was premiered at the Rainbow Theatre in London a few months before the band went into the studio. It was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London. It is Pink Floyd's eighth studio album and was originally released in March 1973. The iconic album packaging, depicting a prismatic spectrum, was designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis.
