The so-called French Suites are actually no more French stylistically than either of Bach's other sets of keyboard suites, the English Suites and the Partitas. They are a fascinating mixture of movements of differing national styles, primarily French and Italian, lacking an introductory movement such as a prelude and conceived for performers without the virtuoso technique demanded in particular by the Partitas. In the sleeve note for his 1961 recording on L'Oiseau-Lyre, reprinted for this newly remastered reissue, Thurston Dart argues persuasively for the use of what was supposed to have been Bach's favourite keyboard instrument, the clavichord. Softer in volume, the intimate clavichord also allows for more dynamic variation than the harpsichord, as well as subtleties of tone.

Filippo Ruge (1725-1767) was born in Rome, where he was a famous traverso player and a member of the prestigious Congregation of St. Cecilia. Later he settles in Paris, where he became a fashionable flautist and composer, soloist in the “Concerts spirituels”, orchestra conductor, and editor and promoter of Italian music in the French capital. In Paris he performed his own symphony “La tempête suivie du calme” (for strings and horns!), one of the most striking examples of French musical descriptivism.

Skip Sempé, distinguished for many years as a master interpreter of the French classical harpsichord repertoire, has recently been hailed as the quintessential ambassador of French Baroque music. With his ensemble Capriccio Stravagante, Sempé presents a fascinating collection of orchestral repertoire from the seventeenth century. La Belle Danse revives the tradition of the 24 Violons of Versailles the most celebrated orchestra of seventeenth century Europe. The album transports the listener to Versailles at the time of Louis XIII and Louis XIV with a dazzling tour of ouvertures and suites by Lully, Marais and Muffat. A selection of rare repertoire that influenced the first generation musicians of the 24 Violons is also included, with dance and theatre music by Michael Praetorius, William Brade and Luigi Rossi.

The French pianist Marcelle Meyer made these recordings of music by Francois Couperin, Rameau, Domenico Scarlatti and Rossini in Paris between 1946 and 1955. Celebrated for her performances of French piano music, notably perhaps that of Chabrier, Debussy and Ravel, Meyer was none the less a zealous champion of the eighteenth-century harpsichordists. Bach's keyboard music played an important part in her daily studies and, together with Couperin, Rameau and Scarlatti, occupied a significant place in her public recital programmes.

Guillaume Yann Tiersen is a French musician and composer. His music is recognized by its use of a large variety of instruments in relatively minimalist compositions, often with a touch of either European classical music or French folk music, using primarily the piano, accordion or violin together with instruments like the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, ondes martenot, harpsichord and typewriter.
Dust Lane is the sixth studio album by Yann Tiersen. Two years in the making, it was largely recorded on Tiersen's current home of Ouessant, a small island off the coast of West Britanny, with further parts recorded on an island in the south Philippines and last touches and final mix at The Chairworks Studio in Castelford with producer Ken Thomas

Although we know little about Robert de Visee (c.1655-1733), he was an important figure in French Baroque music, both as chamber musician to Louis XIV and later as the guitar tutor of Louis XV. He published works, mostly in the form of suites of dances, for guitar, and for the lute and theorbo (a type of bass lute popular in the 17th century).
