When "Brass Construction 5" came out in 1979, one greeted the LP with skepticism. 1977's Brass Construction III was very uneven, and 1978's disappointing, uninspired Brass Construction IV was the funk-disco outfit's weakest album ever. So people didn't have very high hopes for Brass Construction's fifth album. But Randy Muller and his associates pleasantly surprised their fans with this enjoyable LP, which finds them sounding revitalized. A definite improvement over Brass Construction IV, this 1979 release boasts some of the combo's most infectious grooves since Brass Construction II.

Known for his mariachi-inspired easy listening sound, trumpeter Herb Alpert is one of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history. Collection includes: The Lonely Bull (1962); South Of The Border (1964); Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965); !!Going Places!! A brilliant concept from BBE - compiling the best modern funk rather than delving deep into increasingly bare archives. Mark Webster has come up trumps with this 20-track set featuring all manner of funky business from Sasso, Smith & Mudd and The James Taylor Quartet. Fans of the old-school will love Kova & Miles' soulful nu-jazz version of The Meters classic "Handclappin' Song" and Speedometer's take on Eddie Bo's "Love And A Friend", while psych-rock fans should make a beeline for The Chiswick Reach All-Stars' excellent "Nutsin". With more covers, such as Sunlightsquare Latin Combo's excellent version of "I Believe In Miracles" included, this is simply a must for funk fans.

Some needed changes were evident on this release. Producer Randy Muller moved Brass Construction away from horn-driven disco/funk and toward the synthesizer-dominated, heavily syncopated sound that was now ruling R&B and dance music. He restored a little lost luster, as the single "Can You See the Light" got some urban and dance radio airplay, and the band was no longer missing in action.

Issued in 2006, Something for the Weekend is a unique Brass Construction compilation. Rather than cram as many single edits of A-sides as possible, it selects ten of the band's songs in either full album or extended 12" form. Its scope covers the earliest single, 1976's number one R&B hit "Movin'," through the last one to chart, 1985's "Give and Take." There's not enough room for each significant Brass Construction recording, but it's a satisfying alternative for those who are typically frustrated by edit-heavy anthologies. This was released by Stateside, a catalog subsidiary of Capitol in the U.K.

Brass Construction continued to avoid the scrap heap, turning out another better-than-expected album. There were two more good singles in "Walkin' the Line" and "We Can Work It Out," and the production, arrangements, instrumental support, and vocals were all more inspired than they had been in the past.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band certainly knew how to have a good time while playing their music. Their spirited blending of New Orleans jazz parade rhythms with R&B-ish horn riffs made them flexible enough to welcome guests Dr. John (who sings and play piano on "It's All Over Now"), Dizzy Gillespie ("Ooh-Pop-A-Dah"), and Branford Marsalis ("Moose the Mooche") to their Columbia debut without altering their music at all. With Gregory Davis and Efrem Towns playing strong trumpet in the ensembles and occasional solos, and with sousaphonist Kirk Joseph not letting up for a moment, this is a typically spirited set by the unique DDBB.

Brass Construction kept issuing albums, even though many of their contemporaries had called it quits by the mid-'80s. This album once more spawned two minor hits in "Partyline" and "International," and also made Brass Construction one of the few hit disco acts from the '70s that had made it to the middle of the '80s.

By pumping up the beat on the sound of traditional New Orleans funeral and second-line parade bands, and injecting it with doses of soul, funk and bop, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (the group is actually an octet) has almost single-handedly revitalized the genre for the 21st century. This fun compilation collects highlights from the group's 1987 to 1993 stay at Columbia Records, sticking pretty much to the Dirty Dozen's more energetic (thus "hot") material, including "Remember When" and a wonderful version of Jelly Roll Morton's "Jungle Blues." Dizzy Gillespie contributes both his trumpet and a joyful scat vocal to "Ooh Pop a Duh," Branford Marsalis guests on Charlie Parker's "Moose the Mooche," Dr. John brings some soulful voodoo to a cover of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now," and Elvis Costello contributes a lead vocal to "That's How You Got Killed Before."
