'BODYHEAT' was originally released in December 1976 as Polydor-1-6093 in a striking jacket illustrated by Virginia Team. The title cut's single release was his last highest charting single (#13 R&B) until "Living In America" in 1985 (#4 Pop, #10 R&B). A clavinet based funk-er, it features a steadier beat somewhere between his usual funk and straight disco. In fact the back cover of the album announced "James Brown - Brand New Sound." Surprisingly, the rest of the original album's Side One consisted of two ballads, the almost four years stale "It's A Man's, Man's World" retread "Woman," and the much better "Kiss In '77" which deserved more than it's #35 R&B showing. Brown seemed to favor the atypically restrained ballad, featuring it in his concerts for years after it's release.

Released in 1978 & 1979 respectively Watsonian Institue are Johnny Guitar Watson’s backing band and both albums – unsurprisingly – were produced & arranged by Johnny Guitar Watson. There’s a sort of low slung feel to many of the tracks here, reminiscent of Watson’s style. ‘Master Funk’, ‘The Funk If I Know’ and ‘De John’s Delight’ are highlights on Master Funk whilst ‘Pretty Brown Doll’, ‘Lil Sis’ and Follow Me’ are the best tracks on E.D.P.

Paris born guitar virtuoso Emmanuel “U-Nam” Abiteboul always had a great affinity for funk. This passion runs through his entire life's work and reaches its peak with the California Funk Machine. Volume I is a collection of selected pieces of funk history that brought it the greatest success and had a decisive impact on it.

Los Angeles-based soul and jazz guitar man U-NAM (Emmanuel Abiteboul) is a busy old bee! He juggles all kinds of projects – one of which is his THE CALIFORNIA FUNK MACHINE – a soul/funk collective that features an ever-evolving raft of top musicians. The outfit have two albums to their name – imaginatively titled ‘California Funk Machine Volume 1’ and ‘California Funk Machine Volume 2’ and now, just in time for the Christmas party season, U-Nam and the gang are unleashing a third album – and guess what? Yep, it’s ‘California Funk Machine Volume 3’ Like their first two volumes this third iteration is a collection of soul and funk covers – some more well known than others.

It all kinda came together on this 1977 LP: the ferocious funk Johnny had gotten into plus the blistering blues chops he'd always had. Includes Johnny's R&B hit Love That Will Not Die.
