This reissue combines two of the Blackbyrds' classic albums, City Life from 1975 and Unfinished Business from 1976, on a single 74-minute CD. To be sure, "classic" isn't a word that many jazz purists have used to describe the albums - when Donald Byrd produced them, bop's hard-liners were denouncing the Clifford Brown-influenced trumpeter as a shameless sellout and insisting that he should have stuck to straight-ahead acoustic jazz. But then, the Blackbyrds weren't going after jazz purists - their music was soul, funk, and disco with jazz overtones, and the people who bought their albums were more likely to be into Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower of Power than Sonny Stitt or Art Blakey.

On "Awakening", Narada Michael Walden placed aside the jazz fusion leanings of his early albums in favor of a more radio-friendly sound. The strategy worked, with Walden having his first Top Ten R&B single, "I Don't Want Nobody Else (To Dance With You)," which also charted number 47 on the pop charts in early 1979 and Awakening breaking into the R&B Top 15. The follow-up single, the mid-tempo groover "Give Your Love a Chance" featured grand arrangements by Patrick Adams. Walden displays his hyperkinetic drumming skills on "They Want the Feeling." Other standouts are "Love Me Only," the beautiful radio-aired album track "Listen to Me," and the tender "Will You Ever Know."

When the late, great James Brown (God rest his funky soul) gave us 'It's a Man's Man's World' over 50 years ago, the musical declaration went further than the lyrical content – funk was man's music. Brown's funk was pure soul but with hard, aggressive rhythms that did away with much of the sentimentality and sweet flourishes of the more orthodox soul sound at that time. However, when Brown added to those lyrics the one crucial caveat, 'it would be nothing, without a woman or a girl' he was leaving the door open for many a female vocalist to lay down a heartfelt, feminine and soulful cry. And when female vocals are backed up with tough, syncopated and funky rhythms, a bewitching, intoxicating and irresistible brew is created.

Grand Funk Railroad, sometimes shortened as Grank Funk, is an American hard rock band popular during the 1970's & 1980's who toured extensively and played to packed arenas worldwide. Grand Funk Lives spent 5 weeks on the Billboard Music Charts in 1981. What's Funk was released in 1983. We are happy to put the complete Warner Recordings out on CD for your listening enjoyment. This CD features a rare bonus track, Let It Happen.

Mfojo, the man known as Rim Kwaku Obeng. As well as heralding the arrival as solo artist of an exciting new drummer, the title of his 1977 debut, Rim Arrives, also makes reference to the long struggle Kwaku had in getting to that point.
